ABOUT THE MOVIE
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins “Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.

According to “Turning Red” director Domee Shi, if you set a 13-year-old girl’s coming-of-age story in the early 2000s, it’s pretty much mandatory to include a boy band. “We needed our character Mei to be obsessed with something that her mom would not approve of,” said Shi. “Boy bands were the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls that age. The guys were all super pretty, polished, soft and loving, and they had of way of bringing girls and their besties together. Plus, I thought it’d be really cool to create an animated boy band.”

Joining previously announced Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, who lend their voices to Mei and her mother Ming, are Orion Lee as the voice of Mei’s dad, Jin, and Wai Ching Ho as the voice of Grandma. Mei’s tightknit group of friends are voiced by Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, and Hyein Park as Abby. Tristan Allerick Chen voices classmate Tyler, and Addie Chandler lends his voice to Mei’s secret crush Devon. Providing the harmonious voices of the members of 4*Town are Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo and Finneas O’Connell. Rounding out the voice cast are James Hong, Lori Tan Chinn, Lillian Lim, Mia Tagano, Sherry Cola, Sasha Roiz and Lily Sanfelippo.

Most of the listed "deleted" or ideas that did not make it into the movie would have moved the movie away from being about Mei entering adolescence and increasing her independence from her mother. For example having her grandmother die would have unnecessarily darken the movie.

i think the movie was perfect as it is. I can see them doing Mei-zilla in a sequel if they ever do it....but instead of rage causing it....its love or something since by the end of the film she learned to control her panda form. they can deal with elements not used that way too (like gang or family...maybe a black sheep of the family is a gang member and uses their panda form for evil)

As a Chinese I would like to say that this movie is fabulous. The Chinese elements in it are perfect. They even made a cantonese version, which is well matched with the film’s background. Also shows a multicultural Toronto and the life of Chinese immigrant family combined tradition culture with modern elements. Well done, Pixar.

Honestly hearing all the alternates and the possibilities makes me glad we got THIS VERSION. The story is more focused and honest about girls becoming women both in an idealistic and literal way. The other versions i feel mask the central theme or downright ignore it and rely too heavily on past tropes.

I figured anger = size was why her mom's was so big, I'm going to head canon that that's still the rules, but Mei's anger stayed relatively consistent, where as her mother's was built up over years of repression, and being left unaddressed.

It's very possible that the change of name from Fei to Mei could have been to further show how precious Meilin was to her family and this idea that she was still very young to be experiencing these things (her Mum mentions she thought she would have more time before the panda appeared, her Aunties say she is "just a child"). In Chinese, Mei Mei means "little sister", but it can be an affectionate nickname for the youngest girl in the family.

Usually I’m disappointed deleted scenes and story changes didn’t end up in the final production but I truly think this movie was perfect just the way it is and didn’t really need any changes. This movie was so different than anything we’ve seen from Pixar before and it so nicely captures a coming of age story that’s not too cliché or too realistic. It’s my favorite movie right now!

I am absolutely SO GLAD they made the adjustments they did
Mei's Mother being loving but misguided, not resorting to spanking, having Mei using her transformation for her own agency, and having their final conflict being an emotional back and forth with Mei asserting herself and her interests growing up made it feel much more focused as well as their relationship much more healthy.

"To possibly nod to Onward" or maybe just to, be a centaur lol, they exist outside of Onward and she also drew a mermaid version of Devon, so she was probs just drawing him as any mythical creature she could

I just found out that "Fei Shi" can mean "troublesome" in Chinese, but "Meilin" means "beautiful rose". So maybe the producers felt the perfectionist Ming would've wanted a less problematic name for her daughter?

A little headcanon for a deleted scene of mine is the four main characters sneaking off to see 'Spider-Man' (which was released globally on May 3, 2002 during the movie's timeframe) as part of the montage. I think Mir and Abby would have been the ones most insistent on seeing it.

I think the cousin angle might work out as a potential story line in a sequel, but differently not for this story. The movie title, I think that simplicity is much better than puns or overly complicated names. All in all this was a pretty good movie, much different than the usual from Pixar and I hope to see more movies from them like this.

If Pixar added that subplot with ming using Mei's panda form to make money, then the kaiju mother-daughter fight would have made a lot of sense. But Pixar still made another masterpiece regardless of which ending we got.
