DEBUNKING Alt-Right Myths about the First Crusade

preview_player

The alt-right and general conservatives like to paint the First Crusade as a defence of Christendom after sustained Muslim attack since the Islamic Empire spread to Iberia in 711 and was finally halted in Tours, France in 732. I debunk these myths and give the topic the nuance it requires.

I haven't watched Crowder's take on the Crusades, but at least seeing his takes on Columbus day and Native Americans, I think I can summarize his point with "If they're brown, shoot 'em down!"

Also, as far as I'm concerned, he doesn't have a degree in anything, and if he did go to college, he didn't remain since I can't find anything about academic credentials. That being said, good work.

It's a long time since I studied the Crusades and things are fairly fuzzy, so please correct me if I'm wrong. I thought there were contemporary writings that condemned the bloodshed, particularly in the sacking of Jerusalem, and that was one of the many reasons that support for the Crusades fell away.

Love this channel dude. Please keep up the good work.

Biggest point was that the Crusades weren’t really racial at all, and the Crusaders ruled over and interacted with Arabs, Turks, Kurds, and Armenians, often marrying into these various groups and adopting some of their customs

Just started watching your channel and love it, so now I’m watching your old videos. There’s a bit of misinformation that bothers me though. You say if the Muslims conquered Jerusalem they would’ve been as brutal as the Crusaders, then admit Saladin was not. But you chalk this up to a “strong defence” by the Crusader?

Oh, come on. If you’re as much a student of history you should know how the Muslims conquered Jerusalem the _first_ time. The Roman army had already been shattered in the field. There was no defence of the city to be had. And yet, when you look at how the Muslims took it and how the Crusaders took it, it’s literally night and day.

It’s an excruciating disservice to see you dismiss that and, utterly unsubstantiated, say the Muslims would have been just as barbaric simply because it was “a different time”. Whether under Saladin or under Umar, they did not act as the Crusaders did.

This is not to say one people are better than another, of course. But seriously, read about how they took Jerusalem the first time. It’s honestly a beautiful story as far as city-taking goes.

Really enjoyed this one- I didn’t know the details. The Crusades were taught to me (as much of history in high school) in a « then this happened » way. Unfortunately most discussions of history lack nuance, and people like to think in binaries.

Lordy me, this video is mundane. You really haven't a leg to stand talking about nuance. This video is full of sloppy generalizations.

Actually during the Abassid era, the Persians were well-respected as a race and were given lucrative jobs within the empire. This had caused the seljuk slaves to grow jeallus and envy of the abassid court, which led to the Seljuks taking over the caliphate after they betrayed the Abassids. The Persians and Arabs during the Abassid era especially during the golden age of Islam got along well, there are even prominent persian muslim scientists such as Al Razi who looked up to hippocrates, but also criticized his medical work and added more of his own.

You say you don’t specify with any political views, but it is very clear to see that you are relatively left wing. Please explain

What you said about sunnis and shiites having conflict immediately after the prophet's death is inaccurate. Shiism and sunnism did not technically exist for several hundred years after Mohammed's death (in the case of the sunnis it took centuries of scholarship on fiqh (jurisprudence) and hadith for sunnism to develop). It would be more accurate to say that there was conflict between the Alids (supporters of Ali) and Muhajirun (those who went on the hijra from mecca to medina with mohammed) and the Syrian governor mu'awiya's tribe Banu Umayya (umayyads). Please check your facts before speaking so confidently about history to hundreds of people.

Rodney Stark's book on the crusades demolishes your argument. Let me add, Rodney Stark has nothing to do with the "Alt right".

@The Kavernacle Good video.
Have you ever read Anna Komnene's description of Bohemond in the Alexiad? It's fascinating, especially considering the relationship between their fathers.

Just admit that it was BAD and that we can't change it now.

Being common doesn't make something okay. But it makes it understandable why individuals would fall in line.

Just the same as slavery, capitalism, marriage, Nazi rule, fascism, Soviet control. Etc

Yes they're bad.
No not every person involved is inherently bad.
Yes they're still responsible for their choices to uphold oppressive dynamics. To varying degree based om circumstance.

But saying you vsnt judge because norms change is bs.

Progress is not linear. People aren't monoliths. And the more you excuse centrist do nothings in times of evil, the more complacent people feel they *should* be.

And that's dangerous when fascism is on the rise. When islamophibia and xenophobia are so common. Etc

History is certainly important...After all, we tend to repeat it or deny it in many cases....And I see the way you are relating to it....The thing is, many of the power players today, have no idea of this history- Most are uneducated in history, more educated in " Power I am hoping you steer your wonderful talents towards what changes the world today.... America, Great Britain, Europe, Russia, China, Latin America Ultimately...THE have great journalistic energy.... You are a "Force"... I am much older than you..yet I learn from you.... I have only one suggestion...."Focus on the current"....No question our hope is in leaders such as Sanders and Corbin moving If Sanders can break through in 2020... we will have ended the 40 year reign of Neoliberalism... A scourge on humanity.... Peace Brother.
