action 4 is still the king. GoPros 1/1.7 inch sensor in the GoPro kills it. action 4 1/1.3 sensor is so much better. x3 is awesome for cycling/biking videos but action 4 has a more cinematic look an better quality. GoPro 12 needs a major refresh.

Thanks for this one. I have been bouncing back and forth between deciding on the GoPro 12 or the X3. As a "photographer" I believe I have been hung-up on the use of the term "lower image quality" from the X3, but when I watch all the YT footage on my 60" TV I'm not finding much to be picky about. The perspectives easily filmed are amazing. My main use will be filming mountain biking, not shredding down an actual mountain, but more subdued old man riding, fun times with my granddaughter, fishing, hiking, playing with our dogs etc.

You have reassured me that the X3 will be the best choice for ease of capturing what we're doing, and for making fun videos and pictures that are worthy of making a 7 year old giggle.

For me, it's the DJI Pocket 3 and the Insta360 Ace Pro. Done

In normal daylight conditions the OA4 seems to be generations begins the GoPro 11/12. Just look road or snow textures, it’s all been smoothed out / lost. Serious compression algorithm issues. Grass and clouds suffer similar issues looking mushy, almost like someone’s painted them on.

I have to admit I got pulled in listening to all the DJI influencers out there. Sold my x3 with intension of getting x4, wasn’t a bit enough improvement in cropped video for me in the end. Got my OA4 and spotted the issue within minutes, returned it for a GP11 and much happier with the quality. Yes the GoPros will over heat like all action cameras. It just a case of using the correct settings. 4k @ 120fps on a hot day is obviously not a good idea!

Do prefer the Action 3/4 for the 155degree FOV though, and certainly less wide angle distortion.

The X3 creates shots that are really dynamic and impossible to get without a full filming crew following you…
I compared the footage from the X3 vs the Ace pro yesterday during an evening run in the rain. Quite an extreme case. Conclusion:
The x3 showed some artefacts when I was bouncing up and down at speed, at a slow jog the artefacts kinda disappeared. I shot in log. While the level of details wasn’t the best, the shadows were fairly clean. Impressive from these half inch sensors.
Only thing I noticed (especially compared to the Ace) droplets of 💦 water tend to accumulate on the X3 lenses instead of rolling off…

The Ace is indeed amazing in low light! While there were stabilisation artefacts with the X3, there were none with the Ace. And with the standard color profile, you could see in the shadows well enough. I think insta360 may have updated smthg regarding the colors, because I didn’t see the over saturation I saw in a number of reviews.

2 different cameras. I agree with you though: if I can only take, it will in 90% of cases be the X3. The shots from this 360 camera are just too fun and unique compared to a traditional point and shoot action cam.
The better chip in the Ace Pro, makes me really excited for the X4 !!!

Note: they’re expensive, but the magnet quick release mounts are very much worth it. Really improves the experience of mounting these cameras in many different places, or simply keep hands free while recording.
