Academia is broken...

I think there is something fundamentally wrong with what academia has become...

I always keep my videos positive and full of value but this is something that I think needs to be addressed for the benefit of everyone.

Academia and science has become a short term game of grabbing and funding and pushing out papers rather than focussing on what science should be..advancing human knowledge and innovating to make our lives better.

People not trusting science, politicians not listening to science, super competitiveness and hoarding information is the symptom of a broken academic system.

Hello Andy! I'm finishing my phd and I agree 100% with what you say, this is also one of the reason why I don't want to stay in academia. It's interesting that on the one hand, I guess everyone in the system knows this reality (but nothing is done to change that), on the other everyone who has never been in academia is always surprised / shocked when I tell how the system works. I worked as a commercial pilot for ten years, then went to college. If I used the level of abstract reasoning that is being shoved down my throat in academia, while flying, I would have crashed. Looking around, its easy to see our physical existence have been helped little in the past 30 years and now major countries are slipping on basics like life expectancy and sanitary living conditions. Academia is instilling a "useful idiot" mentality in most while degrading the physical sciences and trade skills. Abstract reasoning didn't get us to the moon, Its just hurting our societies, and creating a intellectual caste system where those with the most useless skills and knowledge get paid millions just to spout their unprovable ideologies. Knowledge for the sake of improving our lives is great, knowledge in the form of a circle jerk at colleges goes nowhere

Not entirely unique to academia (quasi-governmental) and the public sector, but the system of bum kissing and insipid nodding at idiotic management for advancement are at their extremes.
