This is a demonstration as to how the da Vinci bridge can be constructed using only 12 pencils and 36 rubber bands.

This was presented at the 2017 Mercy College of Health Sciences Fall Academic Showcase.

I can understand the use of rubber bands for kids. However, the genius of the Da Vinci Bridge is that it utilizes zero fasteners or adhesives. It uses gravity and friction to provide a self-supporting structure. I have had the honor of presenting the concept at my College's annual Mind Trekkers STEM Events, building bridges of various sizes. I even had a local farmer who built his own to keep his animals out of a ravine - it worked! - allowing him to take it down and reconstruct it as local weather demanded.
Frustration with a build is usually the result of low friction (smooth or rounded wood) or tremors while assembling. For the later, utilize the U.S. Navy adage: Two is One, One is None. (It helps to have help.) An advancing army would have the benefit of bark. Some folks use smooth poles and notch them. I have never examined Da Vinci's sketches firsthand so I cannot say whether he notched his wood. I have used large and small dowels without notching. Some folks use flats (popsicle sticks or cut boards).
I like to point out the "basket weave" effect achieved with the construct. From the side, it can resemble an Easter basket. This link shows how flats can be used to demonstrate the assembly technique when put together by one person:
