How Leonardo DiCaprio Forced Hollywood To Take Him Seriously

Leonardo DiCaprio is by far one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Though after his initial foray into the Hollywood machine, it seemed the young Leonardo DiCaprio was forever going to be typecast as the teenage heart throb. That is until he made his turn in Scorsese's Gangs of New York. Gangs of New York showed the world that Leonardo DiCaprio was capable of so much more. Leading to roles in The Departed, Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, and countless other classics.

He really avoided being typecast in the boyish charm leading role, and really showed how he was one of the greatest actors to ever live. He's so good in Gangs of New York, but his performance in The Departed is my all-time favorite that really sees him operating on another level.

Having nearly zero misses his whole career is a testament to both his talent and his ability to choose the right projects to further his career and his status as maybe the greatest actor of his generation

Tom Hanks said it best: "He's the finest actor of his generation". His filmography is astonishing and his performances have always been great. A lot of people don't realise how great of an actor he was pre-Titanic as well, just look at his performances in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries and This Boy's Life.

He truly shined on Django Unchained. Tricked my mom to watch it because of him. She couldn't recognize him.

I was a full fledged member of Leo mania and honestly, I have to thank him for introducing him to my love of movies. I'm a movie buff because of my of Leo. I've followed his entire career. It's truly been incredible to watch. I know he did not like his heartthrob status but I'm glad for it. I may have first been captured by his good looks but I remain a fan because of his immense talent.

I remember my dad not liking Leo in the 90's for his boy charm and saying he looked too girly but now, my dad makes sure to watch everything he stars in and always talks about how amazing of an actor he is.

This man after "Titanic" he could have been easily another guy of cheesy rom-com movies or romantic comedies but no he started working with respected directors like instantly at the beginning of the 2000s like "Scorsese", "Danny Boyle", "Spielberg", "Edward Zwick", "Ridley Scott", "Sam mendes" and more later with "Clint Eastwood", "Tarantino", "Christopher Nolan" & "Alejandro Iñarritu" and always making excellent performances

He followed the Johnny Depp path; people forget or are too young to remember that Depp in the 90's took mostly dramas and Indie movies. He really did try to avoid the romantic lead types.

I took him seriously when DeNiro said that he was the real deal as a child. He hit a little roadblock after the Beach and the Man in the Iron Mask though but starring in all of those Scorsese films helped. I love this channel as a movie buff.

One thing that helps Leo is he doesn't try to appear approachable like every movie star does nowadays, singing karaoke on Jimmy Fallon or taking cheap, against-type comedy roles like so many other "serious" actors do. He's never cold and aloof in public, he just doesn't constantly do press or put on some fake, overly friendly act. That helps sell him as a honest-to-God moviestar to the general public. That and trading in 20-year-old supermodels on a yearly basis.

He should have won more awards in his career. He's a generational icon that people will talk about for decades.

I think it's really interesting the parallel between Leo's and Kate Winslet's careers. Both have taken deliberate roles and, in Kate's case, some riskier ones. But they both seem to be making the choices themselves and have had amazing careers.

Yes, he certainly did get Hollywood to take him seriously. He’s just the best of his generation and a gift to the world

My grandmother is friends with Katherine Cortez who played a character in Critters 3 (DiCaprio's debut).
She told me in a conversation about ~2004, that before DiCaprio even stepped foot on set (as a 15 year old boy in his first film) there were whispers of him being a generational talent "you have to see this kid, I've never seen anything like him". Guess they were right.

Leonardo Dicaprio is the most succesful child actor in Hollywood. I don’t think there is any other child actor that has the same amount of longevity within Hollywood like Leo.

So, I've learned 2 things from this video:

1.) I have Leonardo DiCaprio to thank for my all time favorite movie
2.) I have (yet another) reason to hate Harvey Weinstein, as if I needed more!

Never understood how both Leo and Kate were teenage Oscar nominees before titanic (Gilbert grape & Sense and sensibility) yet had to prove themselves again with GONY and Iris in order to be taken seriously again as true actors just because they led a blockbuster.

Loved him bc of Titanic. But after watching "What's eating Gilbert Grapes?" I was blown away by his acting. Leo deserves an Oscar for that movie ALONE!
