Why don't the square and square roots just cancel? Like square root 5 squared = 5, so why isn't this just 51-49=2? This is the kinda thing I'm always stuck on 🙈

I find it more practical to do it this way

50x50 - 50x50
2500. - 2500
Now we add 51+ 51 for the first part as for 51x51

2500 + 102 = 2602

For the second part we subtract as for 49x49. - (49+49)

2500-98 = 2402

Eventually we get
Sqrt 2602 - 2402 = sqrt 200 = sqrt 100x2
= 10 sqrt 2

If you visualize 49^2 removed from 51^2 you see that the remaining part is 50*4 or 51*2+49*2.
