What i do is i find the nearest sqaure below 23, that is 16. So we get 4 as a part of the answer. Then, i subtract 16 from 23, getting 7. I then double 4 and use the answer to divide 7 (7/8), from which i get 0.875. I add this to the sqaure root of 16 that is 4, and get 4.875, which rounded off is 4.88

i did this and with square root of 20 and it gave me 4.4 but when you round in school its to the nearest full decimal, and when i did it with a calculator it was closer to 4.5. If you are doing this then i suggest you use the sandwhich method and say "in between 4.4 and 4.5" But it looks like it only happens with some numbers so i suggest you should double check.

The nearest perfect square root is √36

So, √39 := (36 + 39)/2√36 = 6.25, which is very close to √39
