"Would" is being used in this lesson in an obsolete definition: desirous to, wish to, have a mind to (and includes the idea of intention). It is a form of the verb "will." In this form, it expresses what is in mind rather than a physical universe fact (in grammar, "would" is the conditional form of "will"). ACIM lessons often use "would" in this meaning. I had to look it up to really understand Lesson 56. I had a vague notion of it but should have looked it up earlier!
