The ancient Hebrews interpreted their Scriptures to mean that human life begins at the moment of birth, not conception. For the Hebrews, *a fetus was not considered a full human being* until it is born, takes its first breath and receives its soul, or nephesh. It's a challenge for us, in the modern Western world, to understand the Hebrew concept of the soul. The Christian concept of the soul is borrowed from the Greeks, particularly from the philosophy of Plato, who developed the idea of a separate, immortal soul distinct from the physical body, which heavily influenced early Christian theologians. For the ancient Hebrews there was no distinction between body and soul. In the ancient Hebrew understanding, the concept of "soul" did not denote a separate entity from the body, but rather encompassed the whole person, including both physical and mental aspects, meaning there was no clear distinction between body and soul as seen in modern Christianity and Western philosophical traditions. The U. S. forbids the execution of a pregnant woman because it believes that unborn babies are human beings. The ancient Hebrews executed pregnant women because unborn babies were not seen as living souls. According to the Mishnah, "in the case of a pregnant woman who is taken by the court to be executed, the court does not wait to execute her until she gives birth. Rather, she is killed immediately. But with regard to a woman taken to be executed who sat on the travailing chair [hamashber] in the throes of labor, the court waits to execute her until she gives birth. In the case of a woman who was killed through court-imposed capital punishment, one may derive benefit from her hair. But in the case of an animal that was killed through court-imposed execution, e.g., for goring a person, deriving benefit from the animal is prohibited."

For one, you probably shouldn’t be using the ESV for issues where exact wording matters to this degree. They refer to premature birth. Do you have any idea what that would mean for the time this was written? Even now with modern medicine, premature birth often causes death to the fetus, but you’re telling us that they are talking about harm to the “child” just because the ESV decided to write it that way instead of how it’s traditionally interpreted by Jewish scholars(miscarriage)

How come different versions say different things. The torah or complete Jewish bible says “If people are fighting with each other and happen to hurt a pregnant woman so badly that her unborn child dies, then, even if no other harm follows, he must be fined. He must pay the amount set by the woman’s husband and confirmed by judges. But if any harm follows, then you are to give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound and bruise for bruise. Even the Dutch version says something different than the English one you are talking about. It does not say if the child/fetus is dead or alive and that if there is no further harm to the woman and only her than there are no further consequences if there is harm or if the woman and only the woman dies than there are consequences. I am not trying to start a discussion or anything else just wondering why there are different ways things are written and translated.

The priest can put anything he wants into the "holy water" before he brings it out, and put anything on the floor and call it "dust, " especially if the angry husband pays him a private visit before the ceremony.

I'm struggling that if the bible forbid abortion, why doesn't it just say "Though shalt not perform abortions" instead of having such cryptic language that leaves us such a challenge to decipher it?

If my mother did not have an emergency abortion, rwo years after Roe decision, me and my brother would not be here. Unfortunately, after she confessed to her Catholic priest in confessional, he excommunicated her from the church. She lost her mind after that and was never the same. Sisters from the church took care of her in her final days but she was no longer accepted by the church and that priest ended up being a pedophile. I'll never really know what really happened. Ive always felt my mother saw something or there was some other reason that priest did that. She would hve died without the procedure and her priest told her basically to die. With eight kids at home. She should die instead of having a life saving procedure. Crazy

Very well articulated Luke. It’s ironic and humorous, despite the horrid nature of the subject being discussed, that Exodus 21:22-25 proves precisely the opposite of what the article writer is purporting. Sometimes I marvel at how there can be so many different and erroneous interpretations of Biblical passages, but then I’m reminded by situations such as this that false teachers will manipulate and bend words in every possible way to support their own ideology.

Life begins when the Lord breathes His breath of life into someone. One cannot grow in utero without that breath of life. What God has breathed into life is His and His alone to take away- not mine. I cannot ever support abortion because it countermands God's ultimate authority and moral law. No way do I want to be giving an account on Judgement for asserting my "authority" over His. God Bless 🥰
