THURSDAY Boots CAPTAIN REVIEW: Are They Worth It?

Thursday Boot Company was founded in 2015, and since then, they'd taken the boot world by storm. They make Goodyear welted boots in a similar fashion to many American Heritage boot brands, but their manufacturing is done overseas to keep costs lower.

My Captains have hit 4 years old, and this Thursday boots review is perfect for you if you're on the fence about the brand.

Thanks for sharing your experience in our boots! We have many customers who have had these boots since our Kickstarter days so it was nice to watch this video testing the durability of our boots over years of wear. Looks like it's time for a resole :) Cheers to many years of wear in your Captains! Best, Kendra from Thursday

Thank you for reviewing Thursday boots after four years. I'm seriously considering this as my first boot.

What a great review. Very impressed by the thoroughness.
I'm especially impressed that BootSpy reviewed a product again after 4 years to show the longevity and quality of the boots and how they held up.
Gotta say, I've never seen another review of this caliber on a product after such a long period. Keep up the good work BootSpy. Thanks.

Literally just got the captains in matte black. They are perfectly hand made. The look is casual but also business. Very sturdy and beautiful

I grew wearing cowboy and work boots (grew on a Texas ranch) and picked up some brown Captains as my first "fashion" boots. They're extremely comfy, look good, and are reasonably tough. I don't know that I would wear these to a real job outside of an office, but they're good and priced quite fairly for what they are.

Your videos have sold me on these boots and I just pulled the trigger on a pair of Captains with Stormking sole. Thanks.

Aye... this boot is absolutely incredible👌And you're 100% right when you say that the Captain bridges the gap between rugged and stylish. I wear this boot with everything and it never ceases to look badass!

Fellow Thursday Captain owner here: have had my pair for 5 years now. I've wore mine almost daily for five winters now, I walked through snow, salt, rain, and mud to and from class all through college with these. You've definitely taken better care of yours than I have because mine are in not-so-good shape as yours. I've replaced the inserts twice, the outsoles once, and had multiple shoelace replacements. The leather is holding up well except for just above the toe-cap where it's now cracking (I have moisturized and cleaned them multiple times before) and the leather on the inside of the boots that hugs my heel has fallen apart with the plastic (I think it's plastic) structural part cracked and falling apart.

I'm sure with more care these boots would be in better shape, but I have put well over two thousand miles on these things over the course of five years. They're wonderful boots and are really comfortable so long as you take care of them. Definitely worth the $200 investment. I think it's time I upgraded to something a little nicer, but for an introduction boot? You can't beat them.

I got my first pair of Thursday boots today, Captains in tobacco. I normally wear a 10-10.5 in sneakers, so i ordered a 9.5 after reading the reviews and watching some you tubers. The 9.5 boots fit perfect. I wore them to run errands and around the house most of the day today. My favorite boots ever. Fit like a glove. Now i see why they're at the top of so many boot review lists. If you're on the fence and considering a pair, my advice is grab them if you can afford a couple of bennies. Peace.

Time for a new set of toplifts, William! (Quality video as always!)

All joking aside, considering the pricepoint of TBC, it's pretty difficult to compare it to most other GYW brands. Sure, you could get some Red Wing or AE seconds, or AEs on sale but even then, they are often above that $200 price point. You could also take it up a notch to some Mark Alberts, Grant Stone, Parkhurst, OSB but with them you're getting into the $250, $300, $450 range. So, again, you can't really compare them there either.

The $199 price point, to me, was marketing genius, if TBC is actually able to make money off them (we can all look to Casper Mattresses, Everlane and other DTC companies that have not done well). The average person looking to buy shoes that aren't a mega fashion brand (CP, Balenciaga, Gucci or whatever) probably scoffs at spending $300 plus on shoes just because they last long.

Pricing at $199 is low enough to convince a lot of average consumers to delve into the GYW space. And getting into the social media space when they did was huge. There's been a lot of other DTC bootmakers out there but TBC was kinda the first to really jump on it big and that's helped with customer acquisition for sure.

Regardless, you actually can't find a full price GYW boot for $200 like anywhere. Yes, you can get seconds, or sales, used, or whatever else. But that takes patience, time, effort and that's worth something to a lot of people.

Are you likely to find much much better GYW boots out there? Absolutely. Are they gonna be as easy to find and buy as Thursday? Absolutely not.
The $200 you spend on these boots is getting you in the door on a pair of shoes that will absolutely last you longer than a pair of Cole Haan's or something similar.
Here's the other thing, for most people, would they rather have 2 pairs of good boots for $400 or 1 pair of really good boots for $400.

I'd argue most of us are gonna go the former. You can get multiple looks and if they only last half as long as a more expensive pair, you're basically in the same place anyway.

Got a pair of these about two years ago and I love them.

Do you put shoe trees in the captains like you have to in the iron rangers?

I don't agree that it has no break-in period. I had to walk on them for about two weeks with a little bit of pain before my footprint sunk into the bed. Now they are perfect. I think a reasonable break-in period is a sign of a durable boot.

I've always worn 1914 Doc Martens.... Now that I'm older, I've been deciding between Thursday Boots Captain and The Iron Ranger. I'm sold on The Captain.

I will agree that these boots are nice and I have the same pair for about 3 years now. An issue I’ve had with them is that the heel padding EVA foam completely went flat. When that happened my ankle began to rub against the heel counter and bruised it really badly. I emailed them and they couldn’t figure out. Took them to a cobbler and he just put more foam under the heel and it fixed. So be ready for that “Thursday drop.” I recently picked up a pair of grant stones and they’re so much better and I highly suggest you try to save up a little bit more if you KNOW you want a heritage style boot. If you want to experiment and not drop 300+, these are a great first boot. But I highly suggest saving up for grant stone, I think it’s worth it.

I have a pair of captains in brown for a few years and more recently a pair in matte black. I love them both. The soles on the matte black are a different material and end up making them a bit heavier. The laces are different between the two and the ones that come with the brown are a bit weak. I've gone through 3 or 4 sets in a few years. All-in-all I am supper happy with them. I just bought a pair of the Casa Moto and they look and wear amazing. As this review and the website says, follow their guidlines on sizing.

Love the look of these boots. I received them as a gift for Christmas. Looking forward to wearing them.

Thanks for the review. I’m a sneaker guy getting into heritage boots. Your videos have been helpful. I like these over the Iron Rangers because of the EVA midsole and better price.
