I wish I could double like this - what a GREAT tip!!! However, one thing to note: this will not work within a table, per the help in the Excel application: it results in a '#SPILL' error. Still VERY useful, imho!

If using an excel table
=ROW() - MIN(ROW(tablename))

This will auto fill into the column.

On the limited number of times I have needed to do anything complex on Excel, only once did I need this shortcut. Oh how I wish I knew it at the time. 400+ data cells entered manually. One shortcut I would like to know if it exists is if there is an easy way to auto fill the other half of a distance chart. I have all the locations for deliveries across the top, and down the side, in the same order. So towns a-z across the top, and a-z down the side. Base starting location top left. I then use Google Maps to find the shortest distance from base to each town across. Then start on the next row, and do the same. The idea is to find the shortest distance at each step. Problem is, I haven't found an easy way to auto rotate and paste the same data in the other triangular half of the spreadsheet, so it can be read both across or down, or a combination of the two. Hopefully the description makes sense.

An underused function. I have to admit I'll use ROW() function to get my unique rows numbers, but that does not auto populate the next row unless a formula is inputted in the cell.
