NOBODY Leads this work like Maazel...he and the VPO ABSOLUTELY understand the sound, style, weight, articulation, color, etc etc that this music needs. Maazel's Sony recording, made at this same time is, IMHO, just about the best, most idiomatic, and best shaped of any that I've heard (surpassed only by Lennie's 1964 NY Phil reading). Check the big Eb minor climax here at 10:30; Maazel is the ONLY conductor I've heard who REALLY understands this crucial juncture, so important to the shape of not only this movement, but of the entire symphony. The music DRAGS ITSELF DOWN, utterly defeated..it seems...but then pulls itself up one last time until, out of nowhere, a majestic chorale in D Major...but only a temporary vision of it. Superbly realized.

Thank you for posting this historic performance! LR
