Speaking as a German with a history degree:
One thing that US movies get reliably wrong about fascism is that they jump right to the gruesome, attention-getting, "thank you oh lord for not making me like that" details and jump the "wait, how the heck did a modern democracy turn into this???" part.

Which is why a modern democracy like the US be full of people who think they know all they need to know about fascism, and are blissfully blind to the fact that it's oozing in under the door of their own home.

Trump had fascist under-tones right from the beginning. The "oh all the world is against us" grievances, the "armies" of evil Others (TM) heading for our borders, threatening our country, the "I'm a super-successful billionaire _and also_ a man of the people!!" ... And now that he, supported by the GOP and (😵‍💫🤮) Faux News, turned that into the new normal, he's dialing it up to eleven.

I used to admire this Mehdi guy. I considered him smart but I completely lost any respect for him with the awful interview he made with Vivek Ramaswamy, who outsmarted him throughout the interview. Mehdi embarrassed himself asking gotcha questions with little knowledge of the subject, wasting Mr Ramaswamy's and the viewers' time with petty things of the past. I think he was butthurt because Mr Ramaswamy called him out for what he was doing
