TENNIS Lesson: 5 Simple Drills To Master The Trophy Position On Your Tennis Serve

Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, shares five simple drills to master the trophy position on your tennis serve. In this lesson, Jeff delivers a detailed demonstration and explanation on each drill, so you can develop an amazing tennis serve.

First, you need to have the right grip to find a great trophy position. Jeff recommends using a continental grip, as it gives you the best chance to properly get into the trophy position on your tennis serve. Here’s an overview of each serve drill:

1. The Half Serve Motion
Get into a platform stance. Then, start with the racquet on your dominant side of the body , and keep the hand close to your head. Next, you’ll toss the ball and simply turn your shoulders to reach the trophy position. You’re going to move your hand about a foot in distance.

2. The ¾ Serve Position
Start with your racquet down right by your back leg, and have the strings facing the back knee. When you toss the ball, just focus on bending your arm and turning the shoulders.

3. The Trophy Position Hold
Start from a regular serve position. Then, pretend to toss the ball and simply hold your trophy position for 15 to 30 seconds. Challenge yourself to keep the weight on your back foot, and perform quality repetitions. Record yourself while performing this drill, then watch the video to analyse and assess areas for improvement.

4. Continuous Serve Drill
Practice moving the racquet in a continuous fashion without hitting a ball. Once you get the hang of it, grab a ball and toss it after doing at least two to three shadow strokes.

5. Serve Into A Fence
The last drill is putting everything together and serve into a fence. This will help you focus on the right habits, and avoid judging the result of the serve that you’re hitting.

Finally, if you really want to change your trophy position and serve like the pros, you need to do a lot of work without hitting the ball and trust the process.

Stay in trophy position with eyes closed. It is an excellent tip.

Jeff I like the continuous drill and use it when teaching. For some people it just works as a Habit Breaker. Sometimes I put a ball in the throat to exaggerate the feel of it for the player....so that is just a weighted version of the drill. More excellent tips. Thanks for sharing.

Another master class.
Trophy position is a stylish name that has stuck, but should be called the "Loaded Position", because that's the point you load both your legs and back...
Whatever the name, as Jeff says: "Find it" -
and then you will find your serve

I thought I would be thrown off by the instructor being left handed, but this was helpful! I'm going to try the continuous motion without a ball to get familiar with how it's supposed to feel!

Hi Jeff, I have been trying to improve my serve by watching your videos. Really like your tips on all of them.
In this video, I have two questions hoping you could clarify them for me.
1. When you toss the ball, does your arm go diagonally inside the court or your arm was parallel to the baseline. I can't really tell from the video angle.
2. At 6:54, you mentioned to keep our weight on the back foot when in the trophy position, could you elaborate on the weight distribution between the two legs? Is it 75% back and 25% front or some other ratios? Thank you in advance for your information.
