I don’t think Charles hated Diana. He just wasn’t romantically in love with her. Regardless, he was most likely devastated because their boys lost a mother and how she died was horrific.

Imagine having to tell your sons that their mother is dead... anybody would have cried as charles did, regardless how much he might have 'hated her'. According to most reports he truly was more devastated than what most would have imagined. And besides he always did admire her as a mother

Whether you believe Charles cried over Diana like that or not, you cannot deny this guys acting was insane. You can actually feel his agony, with no sound, even if it never existed for the real Charles 😢 😭
Edit: Guys I'm not saying Charles didn't cry ik he wasn't a psychopath. I'm just saying even if he wasn't THIS sad (which idk if he was or not) Dominic's acting made us believe he was no matter what happened.

Even though Dominic West doesn't really look that much like Charles at that point in his life, he honestly deserves to win an Emmy just for his acting in this scene alone.

I believe that Charles became closer to Diana after the divorce. Obviously not as before, but I believe that humanity prevailed in their relationship for their children. Diana, even informally, has always been part of the royal family.
Charles' cry, in my opinion, was a cry for the loss of his friend, not his ex-wife. Moreover, he wept for his children and for what Diana represented to that family.
Charles may have been wrong, and he may have been wrong a lot. Of course, he's human like the rest of us. And because he's human, I believe that the peace between him and Diana was real.

I appreciate the detail in the Queen being very upset but not crying. I don’t know if that was a real issue she had, but I recall in the second season a powerful scene where she discussed not being able to cry - even when something was devastating to her.

The Crown got so many things wrong, but one thing that it did get right was the fact that Charles and Diana became good friends after the divorce. It must've been gut wrenching for him to hear of her death.

He cared for her so much more in death than in life. He's the one who pushed for her to get as close to a state funeral as possible.

The whole episode was so gut wrenching and so moving. The acting was so spot on.

After their divorce, Charles and Diana were friends, probably closer than they had been before their marriage. There were reports of them visiting and talking on the phone with each other. Diana even told friends she had accepted Camilla. Charles continued to wear his wedding ring for a long time after her death. We don't really know what happened or who said what but I believe Charles was heartbroken. He loved Diana, probably regret for their marriage, trying to figure out how to tell his sons, wondering how would this hit the country, how it would impact the monarchy and how it would impact his relationship with Camilla. Lots to process.

According to Christopher Andersen, who wrote The King: The Life of Charles III, the then-Prince Charles was “ashen and trembling” when he received the 4.30am phone call revealing Diana's death. “He let out a cry of pain that was so spontaneous and came from the heart. So very sad. 😢

It was indeed true that the then Prince of Wales was deeply devastated by darling Diana's senseless and untimely death. For the first time in his life he stood up to the late Elizabeth II and insisted that Diana should be brought back to the UK with full honours owed to the mother of a future King. He realised much too late that he did actually love her, and the burden over that horrendous week in 1997 was heavy upon him. Rightly so! Regardless of who said whatever between them, Diana was extraordinary and we'll never see anyone quite so charismatic, beautiful or genuinely warm within the Royal Family ever again. I desperately miss her, but will always adore her 💐♥️💐

only those involved can say if charles really cried like that but the man playing charles is so convinceing you could actually feel the pain.and you never hear them say she is dead and that is very tastefully done

I very much appreciate that they "silence" the dialogue of hearing the news of her death. You can only see the impact by their reactions.

I believe he cried for her, and for his sons. I am divorced. The divorce was made quite ugly by his behavior, insistence that I was "unfit" and finally, his refusal to pay back any of the large cash sums I had loaned him during our marriage, any alimony legally due me & his attempt to flee the state with our son without my knowledge. And yet, if he were to suddenly die in such a terrible way.. I know I would cry for him. Our son loves him and despite how poor of a husband he was to me, he has always adored our son and considered him his pride and joy. His death would devastate my child and no matter what has happened between us I do not want him to die. People may say and feel a lot of things during an acrimonious divorce but most of the time, the fact is that you slept next to this person, shared a bathroom with this person, made children with this person, have seen them when they are sick and comforted them when they were sad. There was a time when their happiness made you happy. Even when it all goes to pot, all of that physical closeness does result in the vestige of a connection you can never really break. And should they die suddenly, horribly - you finally realize that.

I think the crown made me realise that Charles wasn't a completely horrible person just as Diana wasn't a saint, they were human beings with their own flaws.

No matter what happened between them, she was still the mother of his children. And now he has to go tell his sons their mother is dead. That would destroy anyone.

She wasn't wearing her seat belt. Her bodyguard was, and he survived.

I’ve just watched it and I have to say I found it very tasteful. Seems they’re very eager to be respectful to both di and the royals, done very well imho. The shot of William
and young Harry weeping in the church really sent me over the edge, hit close to home. Pretty good overall

Charles cried and was heartbroken. No he wasn't in love with her, but she was the mother of his children so he's crying for his boys too. Not everyone knows that he and Diana were in good terms after the separation and visited her in Kensington for tea sometimes.
