Final Cut Pro's new Smooth Slow Mo feature is a game-changer for anyone wanting to create smooth slow-motion footage without having to shoot in a high frame rate. But is it even that good and is it really worth using? In this video, we dive deep into the feature's strengths and weaknesses of FCP's smooth slow-mo, exploring various scenarios where it shines and where it might fall short. I’ll walk you through exactly how to use it and when and why you might want to use it. If you're editing on an Intel Mac, sorry to break it to you, but this one's out of reach. But if you own an Apple Silicon Mac, stick around—this could be your new go-to tool for adding slow motion in post-production if you forgot to shoot it in camera. From maintaining 4K quality in slow-mo shots to overcoming low light issues, there are plenty of reasons to give it a try. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype!

What do you think of the new Smooth Slow Mo feature?

Currently working with old cine film of my recently deceased mother in law that was filmed at 17fps I've slowed it so that it's a realistic speed ~80%. The machine learning is making it come alive. It's as emotional as it is magic.

Works great. I got an iPhone recording from driving through a mine. This became a perfect background in slow motion after the upgrade.

Wow! Perfect. That's exactly the problem I ran into recently. So thank you for teaching us the different solutions that Final Cut Pro offers now. Very helpful.

Great video thanks! Dope feature BUT makes a gigantic library sizes fast 🥵 just have to remember to delete analysis files later (or what they are called)

Thanks, I had forgotten all about this feature! Will be testing it out now, and have a night job this will be helpful for as limited to 30fps.

Smooth slo mo and enhance light and colour are unbelievably useful.

You get a feel for what shots work best after a while. While i prefer in camera over crank there are many times when normal speed shots need to be stretched to cover underlay.

Excellent analysis.

The new slo-mo feature will also have problems with objects that have chaotic or quasi-random motion like flickering flames or falling water as this type of motion is essentially unpredictable, although this is equally true of optical flow.

Apple did a really nice job with this feature. I've used it a ton already. Really handy when you need a shot to just be a touch longer to fill a gap.

Love this feature. It’s super helpful when the normal optical flow/retime editor doesn’t quite cut it.

I think you made the case for how useful it is. I'll use it now.

Hey Dylan, smooth slo mo can save us if we don’t shoot in a higher frame rate ! Great video as always ! Many thanks !!

This is also very helpful when importing 30 FPS videos in 60 FPS projects !
(sadly you'll have to adjust the speed to 99.9% or 100.1% first, or else you can't use the option)

Would be awesome to have a machine learning transition now, similar to Flux...

What’s the best way to clean up the project file after using it? I use the Delete Generated Library Files option but it never cleans up the slow motion part so I am left with project files with large sizes.

You need to chill with these thumbnails. Damn. 🔥 as always

I had a 30fps clip that I wanted to use in my 60fps project. I used this ML smoothing to imitate 60fps clip. I have to say it worked rather well.

It is a bit problematic that a lot of motion causes trouble, since that is precisely when we want to use slow motion…🤪

That being said, I find this feature fantastic. I haven’t experienced any issues so far.

I use the Sony FX30 which crops the already cropped pic in slow motion. In the dark that makes slow motion pretty bad in the dark areas. Slowmo in fcpx is way better.
