How To Be A Good Teacher

We're used to thinking of 'being a teacher' as a specialised job, but in fact, teaching is a skill required of us in a huge range of contexts, from the home to the workplace.

FURTHER READING

“A discussion of how to be a good teacher sounds a little narrow – and probably not very relevant to most of us. Few of us want to be a school teacher, instructing children in some narrow academic subject or other, which is what we overwhelmingly associate with the word ‘teacher’, the person in a rather frayed jacket in front of the class, the type who bored us rigid for long stretches of our early years. However, teaching is far from being something that we only need to learn if we’re contemplating a career in education. Considered properly, teaching – by which we mean, the vital business of getting an important idea from one mind into another – is one of the most crucial life skills that any of us ever require. Every one of us, whatever our occupation, needs to become a good teacher, for our lives constantly require us to deliver crucial information with grace and effectiveness into the deep minds of others…”

1) the good teacher never blames another person for not already knowing.
2) good teachers don't get angry
3) good teachers can admit they don't know lots of things
4) good teachers pick their moments
5) good teachers are also good students

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires

"Nobody has ever learned anything under conditions of humiliation."(3:13) That alone makes this video worth the price of admission!

If you’re a teacher who searched this up, then know that you are appreciated since you wouldn’t be watching this video unless you actually cared about teaching kids properly 😊

I think a good teacher is someone who can spark the students' curiosity to learn more about what is being taught in the classroom.

In my 20's I often went camping with my neighbor/best friend and her family. I love to camp but unlike her, I wasn't raised outdoors and had to learn a lot. I can still clearly remember their reaction to me rowing a canoe, which is more complex then one might imagine. Every time I lost control, their reaction ranged from ridicule to all out rage. I'm 40 now and to this day I associate canoeing with something negative and will make any excuse to avoid going. I realize how irrational this is but that's the effect a shitty teacher has on our subconscious. So when we meet a person who utterly refuses to attempt an activity we consider simply, it can most likely be traced back to a bad teacher somewhere.

My 6th grade English teacher was literally the best. She was an engaging teacher with the kids (which is a good way of kids liking your class) and she was funny. Since she was engaging we all wanted to be in her class and everyone liked her. If there was more of her our school would he more enjoyable and we’d probably learn better.

As a teacher, there is only one point I partly disagree with. It's not always the teacher's fault if a student (as in, a pupil at school) doesn't learn something properly. Languages, maths etc. can not be 100 percent learned and remembered without some self-discipline of the student and his or her own effort to think about and study the resource he has been given access to through the teacher. And I guess that goes for 'life lessons' too. Without the motivation to listen and learn, even the best and most passionate teacher cannot access somebody who is not ready for it. Of course there are many reasons for why a student learns (or doesnt learn) the way they do, and ideally, a teacher would have enough time and freedom to look deeper into every students individual struggle. However, the educational reality we live in nowadays can make this really hard.... :/

This video was awesome!

As a professor, this is very easy to relate to. I had to go through all of these things at one point or another from both the student and teacher perspective. Its always good to start a lesson from a position of humility, it keeps one from glossing over things or condescending to the other person.

This is something I've been giving a lot of thought to and the primary reason I'm going into education. We need to train our teachers better and pair it with a total reform of the education system. Learning should never be a humiliating chore, it should be fun. What is the point of life if not to learn and to have fun, after all?

This is really important for a lot of social debate, especially here on YouTube. Many people online call people who won't listen to them ignorant insult them or talk down on them not realizing that they approach they use is why conversations about social issues goes so rough.

This is a great reminder to always check up on ourselves and our method in teaching. Sometimes we just go along the path without clearly examining whether we're walking on it carelessly or not. Thanks for the video

If only all of us were good teachers and good students how effective communication would be! :) Great video, I'll try to be more aware of my faults whenever I try to communicate something to someone or help someone understand something.
