John Daly's historic 18th hole during the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick.

Contested each May, the PGA Championship is the second major championship in golf’s annual rotation, and perennially features the strongest field in the men's game based on the Official World Golf Rankings. Known for dramatic finishes and notable champions, the Wanamaker Trophy—which has been awarded to the winner since 1916—is inscribed with names such as Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player.

The 2025 PGA Championship is set to take place between 12-18 May at Quail Hollow Club. The reigning champion is Xander Schauffele.

"I have a great future behind me" -Jon Daly 2024

In my opinion, considering the circumstances, playing as a ninth alternate I believe, an unknown caddie to him, couldnt even walk the course prior, let alone play it, the pressure as a rookie, etc., his four rounds were the greatest four days of golf in golfing history. Period. What a giant. ❤

That was a great moment in golf, the week Daly arrived playing golf like we hadn't seen before.

He has an incredibly graceful way of transferring all his body mass into the swing. He absolutely pulverised the ball. Always great fun to watch a guy who was that confident in his swing.

Jesus!! I remember watching that. Back when the PGA had great personalities. Oh and for those that don't know, Daly has had the best tv ratings of any golfer, ever. When he was playing on Sunday and in the top 10, the PGA cheered as they knew everyone was watching.

When he was a rookie people were amazed by his ability to hit the ball far. What is more amazing is his touch around the greens. I stood near him at a tourney and he took a full driver swing on a flop shot out of the rough next to the green. Earlier in the day walking on the course he signed my hat. Genuinely a nice guy.

I remember watching this on TV cheering like hell for him. A virtual unknown before this tournament who hit the ball farther than anyone could back then. Great win by the underdog of underdogs!

I remember meeting John Daly at the 1992 US Open at Shinnekock on Long Island. I had gold badge passes and brought my good friend Wayne with me, who just passed away 3 weeks ago. We were blown away feeling the crush of his drives. He drove the par 5 greens in two!! Birdied or eagled most of them. I think he came in 2nd or third. Also hung with Greg Norman on Sunday... A great time watching these guys play. The good old days. Now I can barely shoot in the 80s anymore at 69 years old... LOL

John Daly's career is a poignant tale of immense talent and missed opportunities. Watching someone with such potential fall short due to personal struggles was often tough. Daly's charisma and unique approach to the game are unforgettable, yet his vices—excessive eating, drinking, smoking, gambling, and partying—along with a lack of dedication to his game and fitness, undoubtedly held him back. With greater focus and discipline, his career could have been even more legendary. Nonetheless, he remains one of the most unforgettable golfers ever, known for his kindness, fun-loving nature, and big heart.

If I remember correctly he was on a standby list to enter the tournament and got a call the night before it started, drove a Volkswagen Beatle all night, arrived in time to tee off and then took over, literally seeded last to win. Played first round with no sleep. Now a days just has fun with his clothes line and drinks to his heart content.

John believed in enjoying life, on the course and off, and he still does ! A great person and a great golfer in my book. He paid dearly for his mistakes and still donated large portions of his winnings to those in need, all while being himself.
