Last surviving member of Admiral Byrd's expedition to Antarctica turns 102 in Atlantic Beach

Chief Robert Johnson (Ret.) turned 102 this week. He was honored at a celebration at Beach Diner in Atlantic Beach.

I come from NZ and learned about him and the expedition in school, what a great man. I don't know what he did in his latter yrs, but boy, what an explosive start. Thank you for helping keep me free with your own life, much appreciated Sir. Many Happy returns for your great day.

I have a Distinguished Service Award from 1931 with Mr Byrd signature given to my grandfather who was the first one to fly airmail from S.F. To L.A. he died in 1933 airplane crash outside of Bakersfield

They could’ve at least spelled “Chief” correctly on the cake that was made for him. Still, he probably didn’t even care about it and was just pleased that all these people turned out to honor him for his service to our nation.

I, too, am a (disabled) veteran and it makes me happy and proud to see much older veterans still around, alive and well.

Wow I don’t know too much about this gentleman’s personal life but I have to say from the outside looking in he seems to be in great shape mentally for his age! This is one strong man right here along with his wife because I’m guessing she’s right within that same age range give or take a bit. It’s beautiful that he has her by his side even on his 102nd birthday! ❤ I hope you guys stay in good mental and physical health for a while longer! 🙏

Amazing how clarion his vocabulary still is and alert. I pray I'm in that condition when I'm 102! He's sharper than me and I'm 55yrs old. Reading is the key to mental alertness I think. And fellowshipping with people our level and above.
