Bangladesh unrest: Angry protesters loot PM's palace, pummel statue of founder Mujibur Rahman

Protesters in Dhaka on Monday (August 5) climbed atop a large statue of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and chiselled away at the statue's head with an axe. Hasina resigned on Monday and fled the country as more people were killed in some of the worst violence since the birth of the South Asian nation more than five decades ago. Army chief General Waker-Us-Zaman said in a televised address that Hasina 76, had left the country and that an interim government would be formed. Protestors in Bangladesh stormed the Prime Minister's official residence shortly after Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation and left the country accompanied by her sister. (Reuters)
