On June 15, 2015, when a single-engine Mooney was on a visual flight rules (VFR) flight and receiving flight following from ZKC. The pilot was en route to Lee’s Summit, Mo. (LXT), when his aircraft experienced an oil pressure failure. The pilot requested a route change to land at a closer airport to accommodate the failure. The pilot located nearby Perryton Ochiltree County Airport, Texas (PYX), and asked atc to relay weather conditions. Controller realized that the weather at PYX was instrument flight rules (IFR) and that the pilot would likely not be able to land there either. Controller then suggested Liberal Airport (LBL) because of its better weather.

Shortly after, the pilot relayed to ATC that his aircraft could not make the distance to LBL, so the controller alternative.
As he was relaying information for Beaver Airport (K44), ATC lost radar and radio contact with the pilot due to the aircraft’s altitude. Controller decided to ask American Eagle flight Envoy 3315 to attempt to contact the pilot. Envoy 3315 was able to reach the distressed pilot over their radio. The controller began to relay clearances and information to and from N345TM through the pilot of Envoy 3315

ATC had the pilot of Envoy 3315 ask the pilot of N345TM to switch over to an emergency frequency to confirm that N345TM had all of the information he needed to land safely. After several minutes, the distressed pilot of N345TM was able to report through the pilot of Envoy 3315 that he had landed safely at K44.

ATC is your friend and sometimes your lifeline. I have needed them to get me out of trouble once. Worked out perfectly.

What is that ringtone ? It's every second or two, eg around 2:00 through 2:30. Super annoying, but I assume it's related to saving lives.

ATC is NOT always your friend. The pilot in command is responsible for knowing the weather and flying the airplane within reason. Those things often conflict. My friend died when he flew into a thunderstorm when just 7 minutes earlier he talked to an FAA controller who said NOTHING about serious weather ahead. And it was Cat 4 to Car 5 weather besides which would show up on his radar. A lawsuit resulted. I do not know the outcome but I think (not sure) the FAA settled rather than take their chances on a verdict against them. That's because an earlier controller had re-routed him on a filed flight plan to that location thinking it was clear. There were 3 very high income victims and the lawsuit was for a ton of money. If the FAA did settle, and the RUMOR is they did, that may have scared them into the cheapest way out. I do know from court records online that the FAA contended right to the end that it was all the pilot's responsibility and his lack of skill. The FAA lawyer stated at that time that their controller had no legal responsibility to warn him of the impending weather and that it was his own loss of control of the airplane that caused the accident. He was IFR rated. But I think the FAA settled as I said. (that is from a fairly reliable hearsay source however).

Why was he given vectors to an airport thirty miles away when there was one at eleven miles?
