The last BT-42 in existence in the Parola Tank Museum has quite a story to tell on how its life was saved.

TLDR: last chibi Finnish KV-2 and other tanks were saved thanks to anime

The BT-42, along with the other tanks, was slated for deterioration by natural elements due to the museum not having enough funds to build shelter for most of their tanks.

Come 2016, the Parola Tank Museum started a crowdfunding campaign which didn't go well at first but after a while, the museum received large amounts of donation from around the world but also from an unlikely place on the other side of the planet, Japan. Around 40k Euros (According to The Chieftain). I wonder why?

Around late 2015, a movie was released about HS girls and tanks, named Girls und Panzer: der Film. Same plot, but with new characters and tanks. This is also where the BT-42 debuted and made quite an impression. There is no proof of causality between these two events, but more like "right place, right time". With those donations, the museum made shelters for the tanks, now protecting them from the harsh Finnish weather.

As a Leo 2a4 driver in Finland and having studied quite a bit of finnish war history in mandatory conscription I'd like to say that these were very quickly and I'd say effectively replaced by german stugs or "Sturmi" as they are called in Finland. We still have couple of those sturmi laying around from that time, one especially called "Bubi" of which crew destroyed many enemy tanks, all marked on the gun with white stripes. You can read about all of these fine pieces that have survived and their individual histories are well documented in andreas lärka s "The Sturmgeschütz in Finnish Service" web page.

I’m from Finland and this is seriously cool. Mate you should definitely come visit Finland and Parola. I’ve been there many times and it’s a must place to check out. WG events in Parola were fun.

It's funny how his pronounciation of "Jatkosota" (0:12) just keeps getting worse (10:45) every time (12:13) he says it.

I funnily enough saw the exact tank in August when we visited the museum. I didnt realize the rarity of the tank so I only have one bad picture of it next to to other tanks. It looks even more ridiculous in real life, especially compared to the Stug III's and KV's it sits next to. Thanks for the words you chose to say in the beginning of the video. Makes me proud to be a Finn!

2:38 When it comes to turret rotation bloom, the rotation device does not improve it too much. Due to increased speed of rotation, the bloom gets bigger, and the second part about dispersion reduction only is enough to compensate for that. In the end you end up being fully aimed at a new point faster as your reticle is pointing in right place faster, and it improves bloom from other sources, but for snapping while turning your turret it doesn't make you any more accurate.

QB has not seen what madness they managed to do with this tank in the girls un panzer movie.

I have this tank. I love it. Use it as a sniping KV2. Damage per shot is awesome. Accurate it is not at all distance but if your shell hits home damage to the enemy is high per shot.

My BT-42 has the most ridiculous setup for any of my tier 5s. Bond optics and vents plus fully upgraded experimental mobility system.

So apparently the museum where the last BT-42 is put out a fundraiser sometime back (in 2015, I think?), and they received an outpouring of funds (40, 000 Euros, according to the Chieftain) from Japan, from the Girls und Panzer fans, so the BT-42 now sits comfortably in shelter.

Also, the Chieftain worked on the Girls und Panzer movie as a consultant, and he says his greatest regret about the movie is that he gave them great interior shots of the T-28 that were not used.

Hey QB, something about HEAT Ammo and guns with spin. Heat and guns with spin stabilisation on shells is generally not a good idea and this applied to users of HEAT ammo in WW2 from guns as the spin is disrupting the effect of the heat. RPG like Panzerfaust/panzerschreck and Bazooka are a different matter. For comparison, the german 75mm at best did about 110mm of pen from tank guns while the 81mm Panzerschreck made it to about 180 to 200mm of penetration - so the spin reduces penetration but at least 30%. Late in WW2 germany deployed first smoothbore guns - panzerwerfer paw - with 81mm smoothbore tube on chassis of the 75mm pak40 using the same warhead as the panzerschreck but not being rocketpropelled but fired from a round based on the 105mm howitzer.
btw. HE only cares for spin on accuracy but not penetration but HESH likes a spin as this helps to spread the plastics explosive equally on the target surface.

I would LOVE for QB to react to the BT-42 scene in the GuP movie 😂
