There were a lot of reasons WHY I quit my 9-5 corporate engineering job, but what was the final straw that made me quit my 9-5 job?

Today I’m explaining the three main reasons why I finally pulled the plug and quit my 9-5 engineering consulting job, as well as some red flags that I noticed at my 9-5 job before I quit.

Let me know in the comments below how you've been doing ♡

Over the past year, I've learned that a lot of employers will not fill all of their open positions, then will act offended when you don't do the work of three people. I've decided I refuse to feel obligated to work on my days off, to kill myself to do extra work when there should be at least two more employees to help, etc.

I've witnessed good people leave because of bad management.
People who are in management who know nothing about managing people. They drive their employees to the ground and talk down to them. So they leave.
Having people skills is becoming a lost art. We are not dogs or robots..we are human beings and they have forgotten it.

Sadly, you are so right. I'm quitting my corporate job on Monday. The last straw was when I had to cancel 1 day off I booked months ago for my daughters birthday.

I just quit my 9-5 & I'm around your age. impact on my health was the biggest one. Constant panic attacks on weekends and during the weekdays I was just trying to manage stress every second of the day.

I find it frustrating when employers bite off more than their employees can chew.

I just worked on paying off all debts, bought a cheap non-fancy home almost paid off. Not being a slave for anyone anymore I will play video games, workout and do what i want. I hate working 1st shift and 3rd shift. I’m a bad employee anyway lol.

I resign my IT job 3 years ago, the best decision I made, am happier, emotionally satisfied and just loving life, these companies demand too much but yet most of then never share the profits with staff

I def resonate with this. Most people at my 9-5 weren’t married or having kids or able to save for a home bc we got paid so little. I realized this job will not give me the finances I need to move forward in my life in ways I want to. It was a sad moment when I realized that!

There is an obsession with some people that everyone should be moving up the career ladder. What is wrong with sticking in the job you have if you like it?

The way I could resonate to everything you're saying...I'm even nearly crying at work. I'm on coffee, sleeping pills, supplements, alcohol, a gravity blanket. Nothing is cute. The only thing that keeps me going is bills. I hate management consulting so much. Its broken me forever. I work at night and over the weekends....nothing is enough.

I switched industries and one thing I realize is that many people spent their 20’s being burnt out and taking the brunt of lower level positions for a future “dream career” with no autonomy and simply do not care by their 30’s. Working in a field and talking to people makes you realize there is NO DREAM CAREER, especially for WOMEN. It’s all about money lifestyle and life balance in your 30’s. By your 30’s you have very little interest in being micromanaged and being a slave on other people’s schedule as well. They need to give people more money and autonomy.

Recurrent nightmares regarding my job, not sleeping, binge eating and shopping, treating my family unfair

When you said the 5 year bit, it reminded me of my job where they sent us all to a class where we have to describe our 5 year plan. I quit after that too, after 10 years at the company. I definitely didn't want to be there (also engineering job just like you!) I much prefer lower pay jobs with less stress. Money isn't worth it if you lose your health.

Our society has created such a vicious cycle... 😥

Oh my goodness! The red flags. My direct report, the CTO, ATTENDED A MEETING (that really wasn’t that important) while he was in the ER with his only son who had been sick for 5 days! I knew then that he can’t preserve/defend his own boundaries, let alone have realistic expectations for others. I quit Friday, and not looking back!, 😊

Yea. Good rundown. Video triggered flashbacks to my own similarly stressful 20 year 9-5 left going on 3 years ago. Trying to bury these negative memories but they too often come to front of mind. Trying to get over it but there it is, as ever, still smoldering. Am in a better place today doing better things so it worked out.

Funny, your videos mirror perfectly my experience going from a technician (no stress, easy to mentally check out and not let it physically effect you) to engineer (high stress, unfulfilling work). I instantly knew I couldn't do it and my body was rejecting it in ways I didn't even know were possible.

This is a pretty huge issue that needs to change in the United States. I've considered leaving the country because of how much our government favors corporations rather than the individual's wellbeing. Corps just bring people in, grind them to dust, and that dust just naturally washes away in the wind. We are abused consistently.

OMG this is me! I’m an engineer. I just don’t bother to take PTO even though I get 25 days a year. HR gets upset with me every couple of years for me not taking time off for letting the days accumulate but I just ignore them and they forget about it for a while.
