Tropicana Field Roof Destroyed by Hurricane Milton

The roof at Tropicana Field was quickly destroyed as Hurricane Milton made landfall in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday.

The storm, which reached Category 5 status earlier this week over the Gulf of Mexico, slammed into Florida’s west coast on Wednesday. Within a few hours, big chunks of the roof at the home of the Tampa Bay Rays started coming off.

The Rays said before the storm hit that the stadium was not being used as a shelter for residents, but it was set up as a staging area for first responders. As of Wednesday night, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin, no injuries were reported.

The roof, according to the team's media guide, is made of "six acres of translucent, Teflon-coated fiberglass and supports itself with 180 miles of cables connected by struts." It was designed to withstand winds of up to 115 mph.

Raymond James Stadium, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was quickly overcome with water, too. Unlike Tropicana Field, the stadium does not have a roof. The Buccaneers are on the road this week, and they left town early to avoid the hurricane.

That's crazy. You're a good dude for putting this in context to homes. Prayers to the folks in Florida.

The same day the Tropicana Hotel is imploded in Vegas for the A's stadium, Tropicana field lost its roof in the hurricane! Bad day for Tropicana.

Actually the $18.3 million figure for the Metrodome was a full roof replacement. They considered repairing it because there were likely only a couple years left for the venue but in the end they filed the insurance claim and replaced it.

It's been a rough week to be a building named Tropicana...

Great reporting Brodie_thank you !!
Angels fan from Anaheim and we're so sorry about what you and all A's
fans are going through.
A few years ago my wife and I were vacationing in St. Pete and drove right by
the Trop.
We're praying for the people of Florida and the Southeast.
Other comments here said if the Trop isn't ready for the 2025 Season then play in Orlando.
Champions stadium at Disney World is really nice and is vastly underused now.
True it seats 8, 000+ but could be a great temporary home for the Rays just up I4
a couple of hours.
Best always
Take good care

Hey Brodie, the Metrodome roof was replaced after the 2010 collapse and not just patched. The $18 million was for the full replacement but didn’t include other repairs. It was just patched when it had some small tears in the 80s, though.

Crazy what happened to Tropicana field. I’d like to see the engineers review of this.

In 2010 the Vikings were playing the Giants. The game was moved to Detroit snd the final home game that season against the Bears was moved to the stadium where the U of M Golden Gophers play football

Wow within 24 hours the Trop in Nevada was destroyed and the Trop in Florida had its roof nearly destroyed

It's not just the roof. The interior was exposed to 8-12 inches of rain overnight. All the electronics (scoreboard, jumbotron, digital marquee signs, sound system, stadium and accent lighting) were also likely heavily damaged or outright destroyed since, this being a domed stadium, was likely never rated to be put in an outdoor environment. Also, that rainwater had to go SOMEWHERE. The lowest point is likely the dugouts which lead right into the locker rooms. So the sublevels of the stadium were likely flooded. This is going to cost WAY more than JUST the roof being replaced.

I rode the storm out in Cocoa Beach on the east coast. Even after it passed through the whole state it was still pretty intense this morning, I don’t even want to know what the Bay Area experienced.

I saw video of Raymond James Stadium completely flooded. They're conducting a site survey on the stadium, but they've got a couple of weeks to make sure it's ready to host football games. The Bucs next home game is against the Ravens on October 21st, Monday night. They're practice facility also suffered some cosmetic damage.

I hope everyone who is riding out the storm in Florida is doing okay and is safe. I have a real close friend living in Tampa right now and me and the rest of our friends have been constantly checking in on him. Thankfully I think the worst of the storm passed Tampa. Really hope everyone there comes out of it safe

Thanks Brodie. The frequency of hurricanes here in east makes you appreciate the relative rarity of devastating earthquakes in California.

Are the rays in the touch tank okay? Anyone know? That was my favorite part about Tropicana.
