You're not 'living paycheck-to-paycheck' if you're going out to restaurants, traveling etc - you're just not being wise with your money. I lived P2P, I didn't have money to spend at restaurants and instead relied on grabbing food from the conference room, buying these sleeves of ground beef at the grocery store, eggs and ritz crackers. That was it. Got a second job as well and then got a promotion and was able to breathe.

I’m willing to bet that if she shared this with her friends she might find out that at least one or more are in the exact same spot financially, feeling the same way and want to make a change but they don’t know how. She could share this honesty and tell them about the changes she will be making in terms of spending and budgeting. Without forcing anything on her friends she may have some of them wanting to do the same thing and they can all walk this journey together to improve their lives. If any of them drop her because she’s no longer going out with them all the time then they weren’t good friends to begin with.

The best way to have money is to pay yourself first at least 10% of your take home pay. Put the money in a stock mutual fund and never touch that money no matter how tough it gets. My opinion.

"I don't have any money!" Dave: "Get new friends" Dang. Hard truth for some but so true. If you have people in your life that you feel pressure you to do things that are not good for you (financially, relationally, health, etc), it's time to think about getting those people out of your life.

This girl's experience is why I live in a LCOL area after traveling and visiting friends in Dallas and NYC. There is NO way I could keep up with their lifestyle. I'll just live simply and have a roof over my head and be thankful.

At least I applaud her for paying off her student loans rather than waiting for Uncle Sam to come to rescue, discharge them all. In all, I find it aggravating that there are ppl out there who are so ignorant, irresponsible— that is taking out massive sums of student loans and can’t pay them back. I was given an opportunity to get EASY student loans of 90k to continue forward to get a doctorate. I turned it down, stuck with a Masters bc I was deathly terrified of being enslaved to creditors. I knew the positions I’d be pursuing after Ph. D initially paid in buckets of chicken feet. Also I have known ppl who used their student loans to finance their travels and “experience.”

This woman is 24. Has a college degree, having fun with her friends, and is debt free in one of the most expensive cities in the world. She’s a rock star and doing better than most people her age. She should be proud of herself.
