History of the MAMAS & the PAPAS part two | #246

Part two continues with the Mamas and Papas story and their heavy involvement in producing the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967. The joy created from this festival did not last and the group faltered. Solo careers followed and the sad death of Cass Elliot. Matt puts the myth on Cass's death to death and goes into detail with clips of many of their best songs and deep cuts.

Matt, this Mamas and Papas series has been music journalism at it's finest from start to finish. Pure excellence.

16:11 - "By this time they probably all had Hep C". Been watching your videos for years and I don't believe I have ever laughed so hard. 🤣🤣🤣

This is one of my favorite series you ever did. This was my father’s favorite group as a young man and he died last year. I have taken over the mantle of fandom and it has been a pleasure getting autographs from Michelle Phillips and getting to know John and Michele’s daughter Chynna and Cass’s daughter Owen thank you once again.

Matt is a master of condensing a bigger story to fit the format he works with without cutting corners. Excellent!

Matt, in this day and age of AI-generated fluff without substance, your deep dives and careful research about these bands are so appreciated!

I used to work in animation, and once upon a time, my dear friend- the late great Ralph Eggleston- early in his great career and slaving at Hanna-Barbera, decided very late one night to plunge into the studio's archive of celebrity guest star model sheets (many from Scooby Doo) and see who had the most animated appearances at the house of Flintstone at 3400 Cahuenga Boulevard. (Despite the archive, there was a new model sheet drawn each time). The winner: a tie- Don Knotts and Cass Elliot.

Great job Matt. Cass Elliot deserved better. It touches me that she made a last call to Michelle. Thanks for all your well researched histories. I always look forward to them and learn much about my favorite bands I didn’t know. Cheers Matt.

FYI....the track "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" by Mama Cass got quite a bit of exposure in a couple of episodes in 2005 in the TV show "LOST".

As someone who lived through these times, I can say with confidence that these "History Of.." series of yours is the most in depth & informative series on 60's music on all of YouTube. Thank you for the effort & time. Great job!

Great video Matt! Cass was a stellar entertainer, sharp as a tack, and had one of the best voices ever. So, I really appreciate you breaking down the media coverage debacle that surrounded her death.

As someone who grew up when the Mamas and Papas hit big on AM radio in the 60's I believe their influence on pop music has been underestimated. Cass was a great talent who never really got her due. A good appreciation.

Matt, Thanks for exposing the sandwich death bell.

I love that you got into the sandwich bit. I am a millennial and I somehow knew the rumor she choked on a sandwich. It’s crazy how much legs these sensational myths have over time even.

Matt, another great episode! When I saw the running time, my reaction was wow, 48 minutes but it flew by. It was never boring. Terrific job.

I saw the reconstituted Mamas & Papas with John, Scott McKenzie, Spanky McFarlane & Mackenzie Phillips in Philadelphia years ago & even got John & Scott to autograph a paper for me. It's long ago i don't remember how they sounded. I did enjoy the show.

I'm 70-years-old. Great series on them. I appreciate your research.

listening to them on AM radio during the 1970's as a kid and they
are a very magnificent group thank you.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶

Thanks for another great history video. These four were vocal craftsmen that were without peers in the sixties. One thing I remember about the sixties was that you never knew what was around the corner, musically.
