As a trainer all I can say is THANK have had these discussion more than I care to say…(just about every new secession) hopefully more people will watch all of your great videos.

Excellent video! While not a trainer, I would add one thing. Just like your dog does not need to greet every dog they see, they don’t need to meet every human that asks. I am a people pleaser by nature so this has been a difficult part of my own training - it is always okay to say no.

I have a small breed "delicate" dog (3 months old). The vet says use a harness, not a collar, due to his delicate trachea, and also to free feed him. I still keep track of how much he eats and when. I notice in your videos almost all of the dogs are medium to large breed. Is there any different techniques for smaller breed dogs? As for the 10 things a dog trainer would never do, I don't do 8 out of the ten, and my dog is incredibly well behaved, so thank you for all your advise as I use your channel a lot.

I used a retractable lead with my dog but I didn't use it like most do. When I was in a park or an area where she could go a good distance from me I reeled it out fully to give her freedom but I still had control in case something went wrong. When I was in an area where she had to be close to me I locked it on one length so that she would be right next to me. I never used it as a retractable lead.

Now I use a normal 6' lead instead. I just used the retractable lead as a training tool as a normal lead and long lead in one.

IMPORTANT part left out about the retractable leash: If it is set to retract and you accidentally drop it (and you WILL at some point) when that thing hurdles towards your dog it will scare the heck out of him/her, probably make her run away, and when it hits him/her can do serious injury.

3:47 Free feeding segment. Another important thing to mention specific, is that free feeding or filling a pets food bowl whenever it's empty can lead to obesity. Many dogs are able to stop themselves from eating too much food but this isn't possible for every dog. As soon as a free feeding pet owner gets ONE animal that can't self regulate their food intake (never feels "full"/won't stop eating), their pet could eat itself to death if the owner doesn't change feeding methods. Anyone out there free feeding a dog or cat, switch to a routine with portioned out food before a current or future pet of yours ends up with obesity problems.

4:29 I got around this by giving my dog two treats when she finishes all her food in her bowl. I don't fill her bowl. I put enough to cover the end of the bowl and can see spots of bowl under the food.

She knows that when she eats her food and emptied the bowl she will get her treats so she eats it all then stands at the bowl looking at me to let me know she's done.

So her food is still of value to her but the food is down until she wants to eat. If she eats in the morning or during the day I won't put food in her bowl again for the rest of the day then.

No she's not underfed or skinny either. She's a 6.5kg cavalier king Charles. She's the perfect weight for her size.

Also she gets treats during the day. And when I'm cooking dinner I cook something small for her too.

Does anyone have any tips on how to keep your dog/puppy cool during the summer as just yesterday in the Uk it reached a high of 30 celsius I am getting my puppy soon and are worried it will be to hot. Is it fine or is there something I have to do?

The thing about dog socialization, I don't know anybody or have any friends that have dogs that are well trained or like basically trained at all. How do I find people who have dogs that I can trust will not add a traumatic or negative experience to my dogs knowledge base?

Is it normal for a person who just fostered/adopted a puppy have anxiety or feel almost like the training has to be perfect for them or the home?

As a professional dog trainer for over 2 decades, I let me GSP ride in my passenger seat with the window down all the time. He loves it! He wears a specific seat belt harness buckled in securely but he does stick his head out of the window when it's safe to do so. E.g., when we're driving around the park roads at 15 miles per hour, etc. Rules aren't set in stone. You can't say, "Every professional trainer would do" anything. There a lot of professional trainers who advocate the use of ecollars, especially to train GSPs for instance. I wouldn't do that but I do let my dog stick his head out of the window when it's safe to do so because, why not? Maybe he should live in a bubble?

Socialization does NOT mean doggie 'friends'. It means paying more attention to YOU.

I’m so afraid to leave my new puppy alone!!!

I have a crate. She uses at bedtime and she literally takes her self to bed and has a super sleeper lol.

I have another crate in the kitchen where she eats her food, but I have not been able to get her to settle in there with the door closed

I left her for four hours last Friday night for the band gig, I am a singer, and during my first break, I get a call from my downstairs neighbor, saying she was crying so loud they could hear it outside!

They went up and got her and she immediately Peed all over them.

Everytime is see a dog with his head out the window sure…..I think it’s cute, but I know how terribly dangerous it can be. Especially tiny dogs just chilling on their persons lap in the driver side of the car could potentially fly out the window on impact.

Surprised that you let your dogs on the furniture. That is a no no in our house.
