Being an emergency physician, what to do first when a patient with the complaint of abdominal pain comes to you is discussed in detail in the beginning. Then abdominal pain red flags come under consideration which include mesenteric ischemia, aortic dissection, and ectopic pregnancy. Important questions to be asked while taking history of the pain are also highlighted.
Likewise, explanation of visceral abdominal pain is provided along with parietal and referred pain. Then examination findings tell that symptoms such as fever, RUQ pain, and jaundice highlights the condition known as cholangitis. Following this, differential diagnosis by location demonstrates that right upper quadrant can be associated with conditions like acute Hepatitis and hepatomegaly. Likewise, Gastritis and gastric ulcer along with several other conditions are most possible cause of pain in left upper quadrant.
The diseases which causes pain in right lower quadrant can be endometriosis, Inguinal and Femoral Hernia, and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Similarly, conditions associated with pain in left lower quadrant are explained. Discussion continues on diseases which arises as a result of diffuse pain. Some of these diseases include acute pancreatitis and peritonitis, Intestinal Obstruction and appendicitis.
