Might be outside the scope of BBM's purview but I would be interested on your collective takes on eating disorders vs bmi/waist circumference guidelines

Lots of us got hit with the genetic $___ stick for navigating our current food environment. The better discussion is "what now?." I think there has been a little progress acknowledging too much of the "food" we are told to eat is garbage.

You mean it's not caused by artificial sweeteners?

You don't say

Yes, indeed they can as can pharmaceutical and psych drugs, which is how, in spite of exercise, I gained weight and all of the variety of exercise I did not only did nothing to alleviate the weight gain, but even induced exercise-cardiomyopathy.

Obesity is from a side effect of choosing to overeat consistently and nothing else!

I would be interested in hearing your takes on how to reconcile the political ideals of freedom and the objective conclusions we can draw regarding the negative externalities generated by obesity.

We seem to be increasingly faced with the attitude of "my body my choice" which is laudable, but it also simultaneously dispenses with the dangers of disease risk.

I suppose what I am getting at is, what is the most reasonable means by which we can cultivate a culture that takes objective knowledge more seriously.

Obesity is a tough topic to tackle especially when you have loved ones that fall in that category.

Awesome video as always 👌🏽

A reasonable discussion on obesity that doesn't just brand obese people as lazy and unmotivated.

Many peer reviewed studies have concluded that an alarming disproportionate percentage of obese people have childhood trauma and resulting PTSD (examples of childhood trauma includes sexual abuse, neglect, food or housing insecurity, etc). In some studies this correlation is is as high as 85%. In nearly all it is a majority. It's not a coincidence that in the case of sexual abuse an affect of obesity is the removal of any type of sexual attention from members of the opposite sex, which would be a comforting coping mechanism as it removes a long ingrained perceived danger. Any obese person looking to lose a mass amount of weight needs to first figure out why they eat the way they do or they will always put the weight back on. There was a study done is Southern California area, San Diego maybe, I forget the doctor's name, that is mind blowing.

This is LARGELY gene irrelevant. For the most part our genetic food consumption has been the same. High meat consumption, low-carb consumption. Then we did have a point of switching to larger carb consumption as population increased to meet demand... Overall no changes. By gene irrelevant, I mean that the gene info is important, but the smaller part of the overall discussion.

So what happened? The last 50-100 years we've introduced a few things: socially condensed environments (increase in food demand), high processing of foods to meet said demand, extreme processing and mislabeling of non-consumables as food (margarine, vegetable oil and other seed oils), GMO/hormone injected foods lowering overall food quality, exponential increases in sugar intake. Another factor no one talks about is THE PILL, sexual revolution, which causes women to put off having children into their 30s which causes a whole other host of issues (autism and other genetic defects, or even straight up inability to reproduce) which also lead to over-eating/depression and as such obesity.

Obesity is caused by consuming too many calories and not doing enough exercise.
