How Atari is Using Old Consoles for Future Success

Today we are going to discuss how Atari was able to find success in the present, using consoles of its past. The release of the 2600 plus and the soon to come 7800 plus seems to accomplish what the VCS could not. So what is the future of Atari, and how can they leverage these consoles into the future? Lets talk about it!

AtariAge is where Atari seems to post its most up to date information, even over its own website. Find it, along with a plethora of homebrew, here:

Of course Atari's own website is where you can find they're products. These links below will help you discover what we've been discussing...

A simple search over on Amazon will help you locate a lot of these products as well!

Please consider becoming a Patreon! Its only 5 dollars a month and you get access to exclusive content. This includes audio, videos, livestreams and behind the scenes stuff!

You can also become a Atari Network Member on YouTube to gain access to the same bonus features as all patreons!:

Also please consider joining the discord server! Its free and we talk all about Atari there.

You can also follow me on Twitter (X), Instagram or Facebook by searching for the Atari Network or 7800progamer!

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

Check out my written reviews and all of Vinnies 20 years of hard work here
Thanks for watching and please subscribe. It does way more than you'll ever know for me.

Hey guys! So this video was supposed to come out 6 days earlier but there was an issue with the audio. I was able to fix it but please note that the audio had to be redone. I left the video editing alone and I didn't cut out everything I normally edit out from the audio. So the video might not be to the usual standards of the channel and I apologize! But I figured it would be better to release it, even in a lesser form than to just leave it be! Anyway, I hope to have yet another video out this week! So stay tuned, stay classy, and thank you all for the support!

Other retro game companies creating new carts for the + system is a great idea

As a huge retro Atari fan, I really dig the direction the company has taken since the new VCS. (I was an original backer and I still do enjoy that platform.) I pre-ordered the 2600+, and I will eventually get a 7800+ although I do not see the necessity to pre-order at the moment. My journey into the 2600+ took me into a quest for cartridges. There are a lot available and the most common can be found for $3 to $5 on eBay or maybe your local used game store. HOWEVER (and this is my main point) the production numbers of some cartridges are slim and finding them for a reasonable price is practically impossible. Try finding 2600 H.E.R.O. and you'll see what I mean. And THIS is the issue with Atari releasing 5200+, Jaguar+, and Lynx+ consoles. The cartridges out these are scarce. The original VCS/2600 sold something like 30 Million units. That's A LOT of "Combat" and "Pitfall" etc cartridges out there. The 7800 sold almost 3.8 Million units and those cartridges (aside from Pole Position 2) are a good bit more rare and more pricey. The Lynx sold about 2Million, the 5200 about 1 Million, and the Jaguar sold only about 250k units. See what I'm getting at? The existence of cartridges out there on eBay and in retro game stores gets more and more rare. If Atari is going to stick to the cartridge only direction for "plus" systems they should hopefully release new cartridges (with old and new games) to meet the console demand. Otherwise you're going to love your Jaguar+ until you actually get it and try finding cartridges to use in it. All this said - I would really love it if, given the "cartridge only" direction, they release more multi-cartridges so if you're putting down $30 to $60 bucks per you're getting more than 1 game.

Hopefully we get Jaguar+ and Lynx+, Two consoles that deserved better. 5200+ would be nice too...

I really like what Atari is doing. Some people are disapproving, but I strongly prefer Atari's approach to this problem over, say, Nintendo's. Would love a Jaguar+. Maybe they will even include CD support...

My prediction- next units will be a Jaguar mini (similar to 400 mini) and an Intellivision +.

My wish, -, I wish there was more love and support for the modern VCS. :)

Well so far, they yet need to do something with the 5200, Lynx and Jaguar nowadays, that might help the legacy of Atari consoles to be more accessible.

I have an original VCS (PAL region) newer silver 2600, Atari 800, 2 x 800 XL's, 520 STFM, MEGA 1 ST, 7800 (with dodgy RF output), Lynx x 2 (both versions, both broken), Jaguar (with CD) Portfolio and tons of software so this revival is great. Am getting the 400 mini and a Lynx / Jag hybrid would be awesome, My Jag works well with a modern TV via SCART which was not available in the US.

The Atari Game Station Pro is a great system. Eliminates the clutter of cartridges and you can expand the gaming library via the microSD slot that comes built in. It has a great selection of built in games, but I have been able to download so many more games (ROMs). I have so many 2600 and 7800 titles now. Worth every penny.

I would lose my mind over a Lynx re-release. I only learned about it recently, and would love to feel one in person.

It's a good start. I only hope that Atari keeps going. Atari could re-release most everything ever made for the 7800. They have the rights already. For what they don't have the rights to, Namco is probably gettable. How great would it be to see the 7800's Pac-Man 40th Anniversary Collection put out officially? C'mon Atari, do it!

Good video! I got the Atari 2600+ plus from Atari earlier this year! I do like it! Not sure about getting the Atari 7800+ system! I already have an Atari 7800 system and the Atari 2600+ plays Atari 7800 game cartridges! I do like some of the games that Atari has coming our for the Atari 7800+ system!

I just love my VCS. And I love my Jaguar, but don't think a Plus version would work unless they do a mini, like you said. If it played carts, Jag curious peope would be disappointed after purchase, when they discover how scarce the games are.

It would be great if devs started making fan ports of classic 8-bit games to the 7800.
I'm sure the community would certainly back a port of Castlevania for instance.

I think we're going to see some great 7800 games coming from ATARI's growing catalogue of I.P.
I'm hoping for enhanced 7800 games featuring Pokey audio for the plus systems.

I think develeopers will relish the chance to create an official retail 7800 game that becomes part of the console's history, so expect to see the quality just keep on getting higher.

Jaguar and LYNX plus is a no-brainer from here.

My favorite Atari console out of all is 2600, 7800 and the Jaguar also the vcs.

I’d love either a Lynx or Jaguar Plus. An Intellivision Plus would also be awesome

A atari ST mini that also has jaguar games on it would be the better option. More ppl have a fondness for the ST than the Jag.
Its the same reason they came out with a atari 400 mini instead of a mini 5200.
Oh and btw where is the review of Cavelords on the atari 400 mini? Lol
Great video

I personally love what Atari is doing, and want them to keep going!

This in a day where I honestly feel like the titans known as Nintendo, and Sony, just aren't good anymore, in my honest opinion. Atari has a huge back catalog of awesome games they can re release.

I think Atari could be a relatively profitable company simply from the fact that not every game requires you to write it using the unreal engine and make it a modified 3-D shooter.

I facepalm when I see somebody make something like a Metro Vania clone using 3-D graphics.
That raises the cost of production exponentially for a game that still plays like a 2-D pixel mapped game.

The success of the one up arcade replicas prove that there’s a profitable industry for people who still make 2-D games.
