LEGO: The Complicated History of the World's Most Wholesome Toy

LEGO history is almost as fascinating as the toys themselves - but the globally renowned, multi-billion-dollar company went through decades of setbacks in an attempt to preserve itself. Created by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Denmark in the 1930s, the toy company's evolution has been shaped by tragedy in many ways. Though LEGO sets are now beloved and ubiquitous toys - and sometimes incredible rare collectibles - they began humbly, as the product of one Danish carpenter who originally crafted items like ironing boards and ladders for a living.

Today I learned that I am a direct descendant of Ole Christiansen. His son Karl is my great grandfather! 😱

I had one of those wooden ducks as a toddler, it now sits in the LEGO museum.
My dad worked as a model builder at the themepark in Billund and overheard someone mentioning that it was the only piece they missed in the collection and my dad told them I had one at home. I got paid in LEGO sets, I dont know how much it was worth but I got a lot of LEGO. I'm sure they made a very good deal but I was more than happy with my payment.

I loved the Exxon station, it was always getting robbed, someone drove away with the nozzle still attached dragging the pump or the sign getting ran into knocking it down… very realistic play.

I remember when the Lego space collections started coming out in the 80's, those were my absolute favorites. I was (and still am) a total space nerd, so that was right up my alley.

Shoot I’m surprised you didn’t mention Bionicle! After the hard times in the 90s and all of the money spent on licensing, Bionicle basically kept the company afloat in the early 2000s. Without that line, some say that Lego wouldn’t be around today.

It's amazing after all those troubles, he was still able to make a world famous and beloved toy!

My favorite Lego sets are the medieval castle and knights sets. I received my first one in the early 90s. I also love the Chima sets & cartoons.
In addition, I love the Lord of The Rings Saurman's throne room & the Star Wars ANH Escape Pod sets.

When I was a kid I had one Lego toy (didn't know it was called Lego ) I don't know how I got it but I grew very fond of it I played with it every time I even send it school. I lost it one day at school and I can say it's one of the saddest days in my life. I'm 24 now and I still miss it. But I don't think Lego toys are here in Ghana 🇬🇭

Lego also taught me many swear words when I was a kid due to various relatives stepping on them! I used to set lego booby traps around the house! 😂
I used to love lego, still do but it's super expensive nowadays.

The final question in the video is, without doubt, the easiest to answer. The Lego Saturn V rocket set is epically cool and by far my favorite

The worlds most durable toy! And consistent, a brick from the 80’s fits a brick made 40 years later, people save these for generations! Probably the single mostly important toy ever!
Also the bane of parents feet!

It's nearly impossible for me to choose my favorite sets, but my favorite themes were Spyrius, Space Police 2 (the green and black ships), the sheer variety of Knights themes and Aquanauts/Aquasharks.
