A lot of old PC build videos I see have 8 RAM slots but nowadays they usually only have 4, were they cheaper before cause right now, the 8 slot RAM mobos are so limited if they have to do with "Gaming" in a google search and they cost upwards of $320.

I had one stick of ram go bad and any time I install it my pc blue screens should I buy a dual channel kit and replace one of the of remaining sticks and put a stick in the empty slot or can I just buy a single stick for the empty slot if it's the same type? When I went to new egg at the end of the ram information line there is a s instead of a d I'm guessing it's dual and single but I don't know for sure

So, regardless of the color coding, what's the point of a dual channel MB having 4 slots, or a quad channel having 8? I want to build a computer with 24 or 32GBs of RAM to produce, edit, render, and load RAM previews super fast! (I believe "waiting" shouldn't be included in a "work" flow) I'm thinking about getting a MSI Big Bang Z77, which has 4 slots and no color code, so could I just easily pop in a 32GB 4 stick configuration? If I get a MSI Z77A GD80 instead, how should I configure 32GB?

They're both probably going to be limited by the motherboard. My computer is a 3 year old dell OEM computer with a shitty phenom 830 ii x4. I have samsung 'magic' ram which I'll use when I upgrade the motherboard in the future, or make a new build, but I know the oem ram was clocked at 1333mhz. Can't I just let them both go at 1333? I'd much rather have 12gb slower ram than 8gb 'super fast' ram.

I noticed that linus looks and sounds like the Outsider from Dishonored :)

I might sound dumb but would I need to buy 2 quad channel kits to do 8 channel ram, does that work Linus or anyone

So it's better to use a kit instead of just one stick of ram? For example, 2x4gb or just one 8gb?

So I have the AsRock Extreme4 z97 board. Which i believe is Dual Channel. I have 2 4Gb RAM sticks leaving 2 open slots. Is it okay if I buy 2 more "Identical" 2 4gb sticks to have a total of 16gb of RAM, or is that a no? I'm pretty new to all this. :)

so im planning on buying an LGA 1151 motherboard that supports dual channel, if i were to buy a quad channel kit, would it still work and just reduce performance or not work at all?

Will ddr4 in quad or dual make a difference for gaming?

I have some questions, on those X99 most mobos say they can take a max of 128GB of memory but how, thats would need 4x32GB, i dont think there are single sticks of 32 yet, even 64 would need 4x16, also the new CPUs only can take 4 channels, with 4 sticks the max you can do is 32 for now i think, finally, why are there DDR4 memory with more than 2133mhz when the max I saw a cpu taking is 2133, am i missing something?Edit: oh wait, the x99 has 8 slots for memory right? so if i put 4x8 + 4x8 will it still count as quad channel?
