Awaiting the new The Rolling Stones album Hackney Diamonds I am taking a closer look at the full discography of The Rolling Stones.

In this video I am taking a closer listen to their 1972 album Exile On Main St. Which spawned no big hits but a lot of important deep cuts like ‘Sweet Virginia’ and ‘Shine A Light’.

Let it Loose is an epic song and Mick Jagger's vocal performance is fantastic. Somehow between the damp basement in France and the overdubs in Los Angeles they managed to pull it off.

I agree. This is a true masterpiece. Widely acknowledged as one of the best rock albums of all time.

This is the greatest rock album of all time. Eclectic, raw, gritty, sexy, dirty, sleazy rock n roll. It’s got everything…a beautiful combination of rock, blues, gospel, and country. If you don’t like this album you’re a robot.

Hi.
My number 2 album of all times, right behind The Beatles' White album.
I like the "muddy or messy" recording of Exile.
Take care.

love'd your description that it sounds like a band just starting out and having fun. that's definitely what it sounds like.

Best appreciated if listened to as a whole vs. picking out individual tracks (hits).

I agree with you about Shine a Light, the song soars into the stratosphere. Again, it's a miracle they managed to pull it off considering the recording environment. Although they had talent, they were arguably "lucky" during that era in the way some songs just somehow fell together like magic. Contrast that with the song It's Only Rock and Roll where you can hear how the song did not "fall together." The recording is a mess and it sounds like the song is held together with scotch tape and elastic bands. It sounds like it's going to fall apart any second. Ironically, that is what gives that particular song its charm.

Kieth Richard wrote Wild Horses to his son. He told his son wild horses couldn’t drag me away when he was going on tour.

Great review. This is easily my favorite Stones album and one of my top rock n roll albums of all time.. or a double album there’s surprisingly little throw-away filler music. As a matter of fact there’s NONE. Every single song is as unique as the next but fitting firmly in a dusty rural countrified flavor. I personally don’t think “Tumbling Dice” and “Rocks Off” belong on this masterpiece as they both wreak of your standard commercial Stones hit music. And it’s a shame Jagger doesnt even recognize the brilliance of his own music but I have to assume Keith does. This is a musician’s album as the joy from each musician soundly comes through.

I agree on Shine a Light. In fact i think side 4 might be the best thing they ever did. Which makes it probably the best rock and roll ever recorded?

I’ve never been attracted to The Rolling Stones and I see you keep on streaming about them so I’m curious, what the best record you would recommend to understand their best?
