🔍 How to Adjust Aisin Carburetor - Throttle & Fuel Adjustment Locations - 22R - Toyota Pickup

Throttle and fuel adjustment screw locations for an Aisin Carburetor on an '88 Toyota pickup 22R
Throttle: ~ 3 1/2 turns
Fuel Mixture: ~ 2 1/2 turns

The throttle screw is location on the passenger's side on the rear of the carburetor (near the top).

The fuel mixture screw is also located on the passenger's side. However, it's more difficult to locate as it is set back into the housing of the carb, near the bottom.

The throttle screw can take a flat or phillips head.

The fuel mixture requires a flat head of a specific size.

After setting default throttle and fuel positions, you will want to tune your carb according to your elevation.

Note: carburetors use natural atmospheric pressure in regards to supplying fuel to the intake manifold. Different elevations experience different levels of pressure in the atmosphere. This can have a minute but drastic effects on your engine's performance and efficiency.

I personally like to adjust my throttle to roughly 700-750 rpm (22r motor) and I'll then run it for at least 300 miles. I'll then check my spark plugs (best if brand new) and inspect for lean or rich conditions.

From there, tune as needed.

Hope this help. Good luck!

Thank you. Those are good starting points. Of course they are adjustable for a reason.

(Note: the idle mixture screw (the second adjustment in the video) has a soft-plug covering it, from the factory, so you may need to remove the plug.)

Also: my '86 pickup (22R) was missing the o-ring on the solenoid, which prevents the float-bowl from draining into the intake manifold, when ignition switch is OFF, from the factory. My truck always required the engine to crank over a few times, before receiving fuel. I'm the original owner and the carburetor was never touched by anyone. When I rebuilt the carburetor a couple years ago, that o-ring was not in the rebuild kit.

Had to pay Toyota dealer $12 to special-order one tiny o-ring. Now the engine starts like it should have, when new.

Thirty plus years of fuel draining into the intake manifold and evaporating, on a vehicle which is driven multiple times every day... that's a lot of fuel that missing o-ring cost me!

This is the best tip I could find,
My best setting is at 3 on the gas and 2 on the air. Is way too high on 3, 1/2
Thanks

For all yo consider. Old carb engines hate mordel crap ethanal fuels. I run an ounce or 2 per gallon of marvel mystery oil in with the gas and amsoil octane boost. I get a much smoother running 22r by far. Sure a few bucks more but well worth it. Getting about 19 to 20 mpg consistently.

I never understood all the vacuum lines and complexity on these little carbs. My lord it is like the complexity of a ten thousand piece jigsaw puzzle. And all that for a four cylinder.

This is great (not found in Haynes man.) but that only 1/2 the story. Next is getting the slow idle tweeked so the engine runs smooth (and passes smog). BTW, setting the valves (1hr job) really helps to smooth out engine idle+ performance.

De acuerdo ala altura sobre el nivel del mar es la graduacion, a 2600 metros sobre el nivel del mar son 4 cuatro vueltas de gas, por 1 y media de aire.

I’ve been looking for a video like this but none of you show us with the camera the exact screws that you were turning. I turn my idle all the way in and then turned it back 3 1/2 turns and the thing was idling at about three or 4000 RPMs or more sounded like it was gonna blow up so I had to turn it all the way back almost out

Isaac, I just had the carburetor replaced on my 1987 Toyota pickup and now it hesitates at take off and it dies if I punch the gas, so I have to give it gas slowly and it started doing it right after the carburetor replacement??
