The Bani Makhzum were the most warlike clan among the Quraysh of Mecca. That is why during Ghazwah al Badr, Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib al-Hashimi (Commander of the Muslim Army and paternal uncle of MUHAMMAD and ALI), instructed Ali ibn Abu Talib to concentrate on fighting the Bani Makhzum clansmen first as they were the most fierce combatants of the Meccan Army. As a result, 18 of the 25 Bani Makhzum clansmen were single-handedly slain by ALI IBN ABU TALIB. Khalid bin Walid was knocked off his horse during this furious engagement and would have been cut down as he scrambled to his feet were it not for his brother Walid coming to his rescue... The brothers double-backed on Walid's horse as they retreated from where ALI IBN ABU TALIB was fighting. Walid's horse ended up tripping and both Khalid and Walid were surrounded by Muslim fighters who took them captive.

Khalid ibn al Walid was NOT the greatest Muslim He was the MOST successful Muslim general... Khalid escaped with his life at the Battle Of Badr where his father Walid bin Mughirah, his uncles, and his brothers and cousins were slain in battle!! At Badr, there were 70 Meccans slain by the Muslim Army of which 36 were single-handedly killed by ALI IBN ABU TALIB. Most of Khalid's 25 kinsmen of the Bani Makhzum clan who were slain at Badr were slain by ALI IBN ABU TALIB. Khalid himself almost fell to ALI's sword, but he fled the battlefield along with the rest of the fleeing Meccans. Khalid fought and LOST 2 battles against the Muslims: Badr and Khandaq! Khalid almost lost the Battle of Uhud to the Muslims. He only won because of the disobedience of the Muslim archery division who broke ranks when they were ordered not to...
