How to check and adjust VALVE CLEARANCE (valve lash)

Want to check and adjust your valve clearance? Here's how.

So, the other day I heard a weird noise coming from my engine. Shut it off, contemplated suicide, but then pulled my sh*t together and decided to investigate. Is it rod knock? piston slap? valve clatter? or something else entirely? Well, I won't know until I rule them out one by one.

I decided with to start with the simple and least expensive possible cause which is valve noise due to valve clearance (valve lash) being out of adjustment. I had a machine shop set up my valve clearance according to the numbers I gave them, but I never checked them.

So I took off my cam covers, got my feeler gauge and measured my valve clearances. All were within spec, which is kinda sad as it means I will probably have to dig deeper to uncover the culprit behind my engine noise.

I feel for you, I've recently done the head gasket and machining the head on my B18, and now I've got a much more audible ticking sound even after adjusting the valve lash to spec, adding lucas sythetic oil stabilizer seemed to have helped however I feel that's a temporary band-aid, hoping it's not slapping. mr2 valves are weird... first time I’ve seen shims used to adjust the valves. Most others have to twist a screw and lock with a wrench.

There's a tool for swapping shims without removing the cams. Look around for a Blue Point YA8825 and YA8825-1.

I didn't remove the spark plugs because I'm a bit lazy. I'll just rotate this pully. It takes a bit more effort 😂

Hey my 4AGE makes an almost identical noise but not quite as loud, I was never able to find out what it was (I also thought it was valve noise). I have checked after quite a while of it making this noise and there is no damage to speak of.
