Do You Know How to Check and Adjust Engine Timing?? | 1995 Ford F150

In this video, I show you how to check the timing on your engine and then make adjustments. This is the 5.0L / 302 Ford engine and I am using a plan, nothing fancy Actron timing light. The process is simple. You aim the timing light at the harmonic balancer and you see where the timing marks line up with the timing indicator arrow/pointer. To adjust the timing, you loosen the distributor hold down bolt and rotate/turn the distributor until you reach the correct timing mark. Adjusting engine timing has the potential to increase/improve mpg and increase horsepower.
Timing marks look like this: ATDC 10. | I I I I 0 I I I I | 10 BTDC
On this engine, you want the pointer to lining up with 10 BTDC.

Love your videos. I just bought a 1990 F250 and this video gave me about 40 more horsepower since the 5.0 engine was set at 0 degrees. I adjusted to the 10 degrees BTDC as labeled under the hood using the method outlined in your video. I'm going to continue to upgrade this truck and enjoy it. Thank you!

The SPOUT (SPark OUTput) connector is the little plug on the wires going into the TFI module on the distributor. You have to pull it out before setting the timing. Pulling it eliminates the timing advance function by disconnecting the ECU from the ignition system.

Always a great video my dude! I've been neglecting my old girl for way too long. When your vids pop up it always reminds me that I'm a bad ford owner. Working on my 94' F150 with the 5.8 is a ton better than my daily driver.

Nicely done
I just recently replaced my distributor in my 89 F150 5.0 and I got it really close by ear so it looks like I'll be getting a timing light and getting it spot on and maybe picking up some power and mileage

Nice work!

I have the timing set to 14 degrees on my 1994 Lightning and I run ethanol free 91 octane fuel.

i did not know you had to disconnect that one connector before loosening the distributor and trying to adjust the timing...i guess that grey square thing near the ignition module serves the same purpose as when you have to disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the vacuum advance before you can get the timing done correctly

What a cool tip! I can’t wait to perform this on my 351W. Thanks for another good how-to!

I like using my dial back timing light. I put my marker on 0° and use the timing light to center the light back on the line. Makes it much easier to find that sweet 13° mark that these 302 engines like running at.

Looking forward to what you have to say about engine timing. I basically did mine mostly by maxing out my manifold vacuum guage..and then dialling back just slightly. Somewhere around 15 degrees, I think....but I'm not sure as I did it last fall.

Fun fact if your timing pointer and crankshaft position sensor ever gets destroyed order look up a 1996 ford explore with a 5.0 and you can find it all together.

Great info and video shots. Good shots on the work being done. Sometimes on other channel's vids we get a good narrative, but terrible angles to the point you can't actually see what's going on. That's not the case here though! Great content. Keep it up for sure. Liked and sub'd

You did not mention when you re-attach the grey plug. Before cutting off the engine, before tightening the distributor?

Hey there, could you please do a video of replacing the crankshaft positioning sensor. I’m in a bind and don’t know how to do it!

What happens when you re-install the spout? Or do you just leave it out all together? I've heard putting the spout back in will cause the ECM to reset back?

Good job. One suggestion though after buying an OBD1 and reading the manual, apparently timing should be adjusted/checked between KOEO and KOER..
