I don't think the old art is bad, it just serves a different purpose. The old one is what I expect in a kids novel and the new one is what I expect when I search fanart to see the handsome version of the characters lol

everyone in the comments talking about the artists is missing a lot of context. basically for the old art Rick Riordan commissioned an artist who specialized in drawing monsters, not people, so while they did they best they could they honestly didn’t do too well simply because this wasn’t what they were used to drawing— and if you see the rest of the book the monsters were indeed illustrated spectacularly. the newer official artworks were actually originally fanarts that Riordan liked so much that he made them official. while I prefer the newer ones too its good to understand why the older ones looked so “bad”.

The old art was at the start of the series, when they were younger and more awkward (as we all are at the start.) The new art shows them more developed, physically of course as they grew, but they were naturally more fleshed out by adventures as more complex people over the years.
