The Germans are in a panic! Thunderstorm snowfall hit Germany!

April's "thunderstorm" in Germany caused plane cancellations, downed trees and traffic problems. Soldiers and their families in the military community of Kaiserslautern were digging up the ground in the morning after an April storm that dropped up to 10 inches of heavy sleet overnight and, in some villages, cut off electricity, toppled trees, and caused traffic congestion. Flights at Ramstein Air Base had to be temporarily suspended.
Snow began to accumulate and by 10 pm the roads were slippery and visibility was poor due to snow storms accompanied by thunder and lightning, a rare weather event known as "thunderstorm snow".
The storm cut power to more than 33 communities in the area. Local police said there was still no electricity in some places as of noon. According to Kelly Sanders, a spokesman for the 86th Wing, Air Force civil engineers were still assessing damage at Ramstein Air Force Base in the morning after clearing snow from roads and flight lines all night. Crews found at least eight fallen trees, some of which blocked roads or damaged fences, she said.
The two arriving aircraft were sent to land at the Spangdahl Air Base in southwestern Germany and Frankfurt.
The Rhineland-Palatinate army garrison stated that the roads in the Baumholder area were slippery and icy in the morning and advised soldiers and their families to drive with caution, especially on minor roads and in the countryside. Road conditions at bases in the Kaiserslautern area were "red" at night, signaling drivers to stay off the streets if possible and exercise "extreme caution" while driving. But by noon, local roads were mostly green after most of the snow had been cleared or melted.
In Kaiserslautern, city buses have all but stopped running, leaving diners and bartenders stranded in the city. By 11 p.m., many trains across the region had been canceled or delayed, the service said on Twitter.
Traffic on the A6 autobahn in and around Kaiserslautern was halted due to overturned trucks, and a fallen tree blocked a section of the A63 autobahn near Sembach. More than 50 accidents and more than 80 fallen trees have been recorded throughout the region. Two people were slightly injured. Base and school events, including the Ramstein Easter egg hunt, were cancelled. The high schools of Ramstein and Kaiserslautern were forced to withdraw from the Ministry of Defense training event in Wiesbaden due to weather conditions.
