China’s determination to assert its disputed sovereignty over the entirety of the vast South China Sea has sparked increasing clashes with its neighbors in recent years, particularly the Philippines. CNN's Ivan Watson joined the Philippine Coast Guard for two days, the first time foreign journalists have been allowed to embed with the fleet in decades. #China #Philippines #SouthChinaSea #CNN #News

These chinese ships are thousands of miles away from their coastline while ours is only one hundred miles. They have been depriving our fishermen of their livelihood, the Filipino people of food, & chinese are destroying the corals.

I'm glad he was not on that small boat getting water cannoned by the two big ships. Saw a video from the inside perspective... Everyone was holding on to something, but they got blasted away from the water. Windows were not able to hold it, 4 men were injured. It was horrible.

It's nice to see the MSM is finely covering this. I lived in the Philippines 4 years ago. The sinking of Pino and Vietnamese fishing boats was going on then. There was a coalition of 7 countries. With the support of the US. (Not sure about now) that are resisting China's effort to seize control of the S. China sea. Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. China desperately wants control of this extremely vital shipping lane.

Even the Filipino fishermen are being harrased and threatened by the Chinese Coast Guards, they confiscate whatever the fishermen have caugh in the area. Such action is inhumane. That area is considered as a traditional fishing ground and so should be open to everyone, specially those small fishermen who just catches fish for their daily food.

"July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague adjudicating the Philippines' case against China in the South China Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the Philippines."

Respect for the rule of law and thus, what is rightfully part of the Philippines must be upheld. Correction on the CNN reporting, the claim of the Philippines has already been ruled in favor of the Philippines. And FYI, that part of the ocean is called The West Philippine Sea. But, thank you CNN for sharing this reoccurring incident to the world.

The Philippines should increase the number of resupply vessels from two to atleast five. In case war breaks out, the Philippines would have no access to oil as the route requires passage to the South China Sea. Philippines ought to mitigate this risk by having another oil route through Makassar Straight

We have got to stop calling it the South China Sea. This is literally the territorial waters of other countries. It's like calling Fort Lauderdale's beaches part of the "West French Sea".

I was one of the first reporters to cover this story in 1994. Haha this lacks context and distance from Balabac the near pest large Philippine island to the shoal is about 90 miles. Also no mention that China has already lost a case decision at UNCLOS UN on taking control of islands and reefs.

It is not an international water, it is an EEZ of the Philippines!!!

Why this reporter say claimed by phillipines? It was decided by Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Haguethat they belong to phillipines

These islands are not disputed according the international law. They belong to the Philippines. in 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague stated that China has no legal claim to the area according the UNCLOS law of the sea, which both the Philippines and China are signatories of. The nearest part of China is nearly 700 miles from this shoal. A quick look at a map will show how absolutely ridiculous China's claims to the area are.

Sounds like the Chinese Coast Guard needs to donate a new artificial reef.
