China is facing mounting criticism over clashes in the South China Sea between its Coast Guard and vessels from the Philippines — incidents condemned by Manila as "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive."
China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun defended Beijing’s actions, in a speech seen by many as threatening not just to the Philippines but also Taiwan and its new President Lai Ching-te. At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, DW's Richard Walker spoke to retired Senior Colonel Zhou Bo, a veteran of China's PLA military. They discussed events in the South China Sea and how they fit in the wider context of escalating tensions between China and the US. Can Beijing persuade regional neighbors in Southeast Asia that its intentions are peaceful?

The Russian thought they had overwhelming military strength too, yet we’re 800 days into their 3 day special operation. Considering that China has spent years reverse engineering Russian military technology vs innovating their own, I’d reckon their capabilities are grossly overestimated as well.
