The character first appears in The Silver Surfer #3 (Dec. 1968) and was introduced in the Marvel Universe by Stan Lee and John Buscema, based on Mephistopheles – a demon character from the Faust legend, who has sometimes been referred to as Mephisto.

I remember one time Mephisto was defeated in his own relm. It was done by Adam Warlock with the Soul Gem. Adam said he is most powerful in his realm because it is a part of his own soul. However Adam Soul Gem was able to grant him mastery over all souls, so he eventually defeated him at his most powerful.

Actually, While Mephisto Gave Galactus A Mighty Battle in Hell, It’s important to note that Galactus eventually demanded Mephisto return his herald Nova, as he began devouring Hell. Needless to say, Mephisto folded.
