Caterpillar D12 Bulldozer
The D12 is said to be larger and more powerful than the D11, Caterpillar's largest dozer to date. It is rumored to be powered by a 12-cylinder diesel engine capable of producing up to 1,500 horsepower. The D12 will also likely feature a new blade design and advanced undercarriage system to handle the increased weight and power.

It’s a custom made machine in Australia, nothing to do with cat themselves. Google custom d12 Australia, it’s not that hard. It’s a d11 that’s been lengthened, widened, & has a motor from a 789 dump truck in it

Quote “how they are built they take a D11R or N model, remove the standard 850hp (V8) engine, stretch out the chassis, making it longer to give them the extra space to shoe horn in a Cat 3512 (V12) engine taken from a giant Cat 785 dump truck. This configuration bumps the power up to an impressive 1250hp The same D11 transmission is used, but they utilise the trucks torque converter and lock up clutch arrangement” I believe 2 were custom for Mearns Hire in Australia and not by Caterpillar themselves.

They made 1 here in Australia. From what i have learnt it was made not by cat, but by a mining group or similar and not for production but for their own use.

A prototype was made a while back that had a cooling system mounted on top of the cab to cool the 1200hp engine. The big difference between the D11 was bigger engine size but not so much bigger in size. It was bigger but not a lot bigger. 👍

A prototype was made that had an engine cooling system mounted on top of the cab. That’s the last I heard of it.

Ran a Cat D22 RT a few times! Which actually 2 D11s a R & T series pushing side with blades together! Also we put a D10N, D9H, D11N, D10R all together in on solid push, I was actually on D10R guy on D9H said he was just along for the ride ! He was afraid dirt was going to roll over blade on top of him!

Interesting video. I used to work repairing Cat Tractors, mainly D6, D8, D9 and D10 flat Track and High Drive variants. As I see it the design base for the heavier High Drive Tractor made the Machine unsuitable in soft conditions but also put a lot of strain on Track adjusters, idler Trunnion Caps and Pivot Shafts. The D11 was in my opinion the absolute limit for the High Track design layout. Introducing a larger Tractor (D12) on the current design platform I don’t think is viable so a redesign would be needed to deal with the huge forces generated from say a 785Engine through a Multi stage Torque into a Planetary Powershift and combined Final Drive. It’s not beyond Cats ability to produce such a Machine but for R&D investment and product certification they would need to sell 100’s of Machines a year worldwide, interesting.

There is a market for a D12.
I think the only reason they haven't built it is it will replace the D11 in a some of the cases. If that is the case it just would hurt D11 sales which doesn't help Cat.

I worked for Robertsons in Palmdale ca 2011 it’s not a myth they had One CAT D12

So I’m gonna go with the theory that there was a D11 modified in to a prototype D12 and it worked and then it was taken apart and rebuilt in to a D11 and no photos were taken of the beast leaving Komatsu with the largest dozer built. Works for me.

My father's Sand plant had a D12 this was the late sixties and early seventies. It took a V8 to start it.

Cat will make one. They are a badass company. Quality and mega power. 💪🏻

A Caterpillar D12 would encounter the same problems that kept the Acco Super Bulldozer from being practical, Such as it was too big to transport it from one place to another. The Cat D12 would end up in a museum just like the Super Bulldozer is now.

Wish there was a Prototype photos of it then we could believe it more

I believe the D-12 would be the same portion larger than the D-11 as the D-11 is to a D-10. Cat likes to build and prove every size😊

Closest thing to D12 is Australian rebuild of a D11 with a bigger Hp engine in it! Two D6s pushing side by side! So is two D11s pushing side by side be a D22? You know in 70s and 80s they actually took D8s and D9 and put them end to end or side together! Guess they would be D16 and D18 ?
