*Changing the Default Foot/End Note Character Style in Text*
The factory setting for footnotes is ¹ ² ³ (superscript numbers). However, in LibreOffice Writer, you can create a text style, then point to it as your document's new style. Let's begin. Hit F11 until you see the *Styles and Formatting* box appear. At the top of the box, just under *Styles and Formatting* click the (Character Styles) button, (looks like a circled *a* - and right-click *Default Style* in the list below it, and click the [New] that appears.
*For this example* a set of choices you may freely modify will be given as base example. Under the *Organizer* tab, name this style (example: FootnoteText). (You may change *Inherit from* to any other style, but let's leave it for now.)
*Font* tab: choose the font family, style and size. I've chosen 12 pt. I've set mine to Italics as well.
*Font Effects* tab: for this example, I've left all the defaults.
*Position* tab: Position = Superscript / uncheck "automatic" and set "Raise/Lower by" to 27%, and "Relative font size" to 65%. Under "Spacing" set it to 1.0. Click OK (you may return to this and make further changes later.)
Click *Footnotes & Endnotes..." under *Tools" from the menu bar.
Under *Autonumbering* I've set it to *a, b, c, ...* and the counting at *Per page*
Here's where the magic happens: under *Character styles, * change the *Text area* to the "FootnoteText" we created earlier. Let's stop here and examine what happens.
The document I'm editing has the footnotes *at the beginning* of the affected phrase. "FootnoteText" effective adds a little bit of space between the footnote character and the word that follows it. It puts the footnote at the correct size and position relative to the sentences without disturbing the flow (Font used: Adobe Caslon Pro), at single spacing.
Now that you have a basic understanding, go wild! Change the settings as far as you wish, new colours, different fonts, etc. The sky is the limit.

I need to know if it is possible to indent my footnotes, and do formatting such as single spaced footnotes, but double spaced between.

Can the footnotes stack horizontally? Mine are simple references, so I don't want to waste a bunch of vertical space.

Just wish I could right click and change my footnotes to end notes. That'd be so wonderful.
