Blackmagic PYXIS 6K: Goodbye RED? | Review & Sample Footage

This is my detailed Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6k review video. I compare it to my RED Cinema Cameras including the RED Epic-X Mysterium-X and the RED Epic-M Dragon and have lots of sample footage to show after putting this camera through its paces for a month. As far as Cinema Cameras go the blackmagic pyxis is extremely competitive compared to cameras like the Blackmagic cinema camera, Sony FX30, Sony FX3, Sony FX6, RED Komodo, RED Komodo-X, and is much more capable than the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras. The BMPCC 4k and BMPCC 6k are very popular, but for years people have been wishing for a budget full frame box-style cinema camera, and the BMD Pyxis exactly that. With a color science similar to ARRI, and a form-factor similar to the RED Komodo, this budget cinema camera will be great for many filmmakers and DPs. Especially for shooting anamorphic with the Blazar Remus anamorphic lenses, the 3:2 open gate and internal-desqueezing of the PYXIS is amazing.

BMD has come a long way since the Pocket Cinema 1. I hope Blackmagic stays independent of the giant camera vendors and stay true to their roots of crafting smart affordable and slightly nutty gear for those of us trying to not take jobs at the corporate studios making the next sequel to whatever.

Thanks for this review mate. Seeing tests in the field means more to me than just charts and spec sheets. I tend to put my gear through its paces, as I'm travelling a lot and shooting docs where time is limited. I have a BMPCC 4k that I'm still using (as still love!), but I'm interested in the pocket 6k FF. The only bummer is the lack of internal ND.

Your "rant" on rolling shutter should be required viewing for every shooter who thinks the entire audience for their work is going to be pixel-peeping, frame-dissecting fellow shooters. If a "civilian" audience finds itself wandering the screen to discover jellied verticals, then they have clearly checked out of whatever narrative to the point that the war is lost. Well done video over all. I have long swam against the current and championed Blackmagic cameras (from the original 2.5K Cinema Camera) for what they deliver at their price point. Glad to see the 6K Pyxis continues their ability to deliver.

Hey! Thx for the video. If i'm not mistaken, I believe you have the 6K DCI in 60 fps! With no crop. Only it's not open gate.

Blackmagic is definitely going in the right direction with the Pyxis! However, I'm going the with the Ursa Broadcast G2 for the internal NDs and better framerates and lower pixel pitch (vfx reasons). Hoping for some sort of Pyxis Pro down the line though to give my Pocket 4K a proper retirement.
