The simple breakdown is:
The Alpha gets his identity from being the leader of some group. The Beta gets his identity from being a member of the group. Both really need the group to be fulfilled. The Sigma gets his identity from independence works hard to avoid the group.

There is a lot of truth to the Sigma thing. It's kind of like an Alpha who is more selfish and doesn't look for the leadership / attention most Alpha's like to get. I'd call the Sigma an introvert type who can do extrovert when it suits him. The Sigma type likes hanging to the side a bit and taking what he wants from the buffet of life a bit more selectively. Definitely a lone wolf type guy who picks and chooses more to his exact wants.
