I use skewers from the grocery store to light my scented candles. Appropriated spills if you will. It feels so much more romantic

Kinda feel like we need these back. Matches are never long enough

I redid a house in Indiana years ago and i found hundreds of those lighting sticks inside a wall along with some mostly roached war time currency from Asia

The spill plane makes a tight elongated spiral of thin wood, so it's really all hollow.

I didnt know such a thing existed! I always used sticks of dry pasta to light my candles using our gas stove to light them

Cedar spills are still a fantastic way to light a tasty cigar! Its a great way to gently light the tobacco without imparting any unwanted flavors you might get from a traditional lighter / match.

And they had a use well past the inception of matches and modern lighting…. I remember my grandad back in the 50’s/60’s sat in his chair next to the fire keeping a box of spills next to the fire grate to light his pipe from the fire- cheaper than matches and no burnt fingers!

These seem so much more helpful for things like deep candles matches always seem to burn weirdly whenever I light my candles

"just be careful with them around your cups of tea"

i know it's a pun but un ironically those would make a great eco frendly disposable Coffe/tea stirring sticks.

These would be perfect for July 4th! Keeps you a good distance away and you can put it out between using!

I remember, as a child, going round with my great aunt lighting the gas lights at her house and we used a wooden spill to do this. It's a very strong memory. She lived in the house from 1890 until about 1970 - I'm sure nothing much changed at the house in that time, despite the outside world changing radically.

When I was growing up we called long sticks for burning things, “punks” and they were mainly used to safely ignite fireworks

Why should I be careful with a spill around...oh, now I got it! 😅

I grew up with a tin of these next to the fireplace! Great for when the power would cut out during winter, you could do just like you said and bring the fire from the fireplace to the candles in each room.

Id definitely still use them ive almost burnt myself so many times trying to use a match or lighter on a candle..

I've used wooden shish kabob skewers to do that. Also to continually light off of a candle and smoke weed with if I couldn't find a lighter.

They are still the preferred item to light cigars and pipes. Regular matches and lighters impart bad tastes to anything they light. Butane lighters are much better, but a cedar spill is still the preferred way for most diehard tobacco lovers.
