Hurricane Hilary is rapidly intensifying and is now at Category 3 intensity, and could strengthen more in the next 24 hours as it heads towards the Baja California peninsula. With the storm expected to arrive on Sunday, a hurricane landfall with heavy rainfall is expected along most of Baja California, and spreading into southern California. Hilary may still be a tropical storm by the time it enters the United States before degenerating, and there is a tenable chance of 60mph winds in San Diego on Sunday night.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, with watches further north. Rainfall amounts of 10 inches (250mm) are possible along the entire region.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Pacific, Fernanda has fallen, and Greg is struggling as a tropical depression in the Central Pacific, to the south of Hawaii. Another area of interest has a small chance of development next week near Costa Rica.

In the Western Pacific, the remnants of Lan continue to proceed well off to the northeast of Japan. Another area of interest could develop next week south of Japan.

Hilary is certainly rapidly intensifying, it was only a TS yesterday! Fernanda has now fallen to cold SST, Greg is struggling, Lan's now dead and the ATL looks to be more active...

For an example of the type of devastation a Hurricane could deliver to Baja and beyond, you only need look at Hurricane Kathleen (1976) which only reached Category 1 status, and Hilary may well bring more moisture than that. It's also worth noting that, for example, three or four inches of rain over hard baked desert landscapes are more likely to deliver flash flooding conditions than say, something like the soils of Southern Florida.

Assuming the Atlantic AOIs do not form, does anyone know the last time the Atlantic had back-to-back Augusts without a tropical storm?
