VideoChat with Junior from University of Illinois and Urbana Champaign (UIUC) who talks of his college experience, the Computer Science Program, the activities he is involved in, food and housing, advice for incoming freshmen, his future plans, study abroad program at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), some fun facts about UIUC and much more.
Nihal Shah - Junior at UIUC / University of Illinois and Urbana Champaign / university of urbana champaign / university of Illinois at urbana champaign. He pursues a computer science program which is highly ranked. The Oculus rift, the VR device is programmed at UIUC and some software for Apple also. The CS program is a lot of hard work. Engineering has only a 50% graduation rate. Core courses at UIUC can be 400-600 large. There are small groups with Teaching assistants (TA’s). Specialised classes can be 40-50 strong. Many courses have weekly MP’s machine projects. Programming is 90% making mistakes.
University of Illinois Urbana-champaign has ACM – Association for computing Machinery, a student group, within computer science they have Special Interest groups (SIG’s), in specialised areas like artificial intelligence, data structures, mobile application, back-end development. There are more learning focused interest groups also. The yearly hackathon at UIUC - Hack Illinois is very well organised. The sporting infrastructure g pool, baseball fields etc. He did a study abroad program and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He felt that HKUST was a new experience and every student should experience a study abroad program. It takes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow.
Academics - the weekly assignments and projects at UIUC make the stress levels higher, whereas at Hong Kong the academics were easier.
Future plans – he has an internship at Facebook this summer and is hoping that would become a long term job. Another option is the five year integrated BS / MS degree. There are two types of MS – one is called Masters of Science and the other is called Masters of Computer Science. Masters of Science provides stipend but research is compulsory. Masters of Computer Science does not provide internships but research is not mandated either.
Advice to freshmen – UIUC is very competitive, be open minded, seek to learn, do not focus on marks or GPA, learn to deal with large numbers, there are many Indians so ensure you make friends from other nationalities to helps you settle down in the US and opens your horizons. The weather is bad, so first few months go out and do all the activities. The quad gives you a great dynamic to study on. Do not take stress about studies.
UIUC Housing – every freshman has to stay on campus so there’s no getting away from that. They have one dorm called the Illinois Street Residence (ISR) which is very close to the Engineering quad, so most students here study engineering. The Ikenberry commons is where all the parties happen. The Engineering quads have more Indians and Asians. ISR has air conditioners AC’s and heating systems.
He stayed at ISR during freshmen year and now lives in an apartment and cooks food. When part of a dorm you can eat anywhere on campus, in any dining room. Certain days of the week has only vegetarian food. There is late night food from 8 to 12. ISR has chops which is a café that makes burgers and coffee etc. Off campus there are several restaurants e.g. chipotle and several cuisines. There are about three Indian restaurants on campus.
It is the No. 1 party school. It is a work hard play hard school. Take a couple of weird courses, courses on wine tasting, bowling, table tennis, tea making etc.

I know this guy, very passionate about CS @ UIUC. Also, you can observe the large disparity of passion between the two: Shah is super super passionate about the truly GREAT program at UIUC, but the interviewer is more or less nodding through the entire thing, saying barely anything except for scripted questions and "yeah, ugh hugh", etc.

Hi. I'm planning to apply for MS CS (USA) program after I finish my Bachelor's in Electronics (from India). It would be great if you could interview some student who has done this before, as it would help students like me who are going to change their field of study. My main Question is: what are the things I should prepare before joining the CS course which would help me compete with other CS students who have their Bachelor's in CS.
